His regular Ped has not been that helpful, although I guess his case is a bit confusing, and we don't have an appt with a new Ped for two more weeks. I am hoping in the meantime, maybe I can get some advice from someone who has seen similar symptoms (maybe???). So here goes...
DS started with a cold in Nov, which developed into an ear infection. He also started burping a lot - like all day long. He went on amoxicillin, which seemed to make him feel better, but 2 days after finishing the amoxicillin was complaining of ear pain again. So I took him back to the Dr., who said he still had a little fluid behind his ear and she prescribed Suprax. I gave it to him that night after dinner, and after he went to sleep he started making these gurgling/gulping noises, like he was swallowing a lot, and then he threw up. I thought it was the medicine. He threw up once more that night.
The next day, I was feeling queasy, and DS was coughing and sneezing, and his stomach was upset. For the next several days, we both had upset stomachs - I have lost 8 lbs in ten days. I did not give him anymore of the antibiotic, and his ear seems to be better. He has not lost much weight, but he still is burping a lot. He threw up last Tuesday (five days after the first time) after going to sleep, and the doctor wanted to see him the next day. He also had a bad cough at the time, so I don't know if he was coughing so hard he threw up or if he threw up and that made him cough.
The doctor really didn't know what to make of it. She was going to prescribe Zantac, and then ended up giving him some children's Tums. He is finally eating better, but still burping a lot.
So the burping started long before the throwing up. He had reflux as an infant, but has not had any problems in at least two years. He hasn't thrown up in a week, but I am still feeding him blandish meals, and feeding him well before bedtime, since he was throwing up after going to sleep.
Has anyone had this stomach bug? Is it lasting this long for you? I can't get him to eat yogurt, which I think might help him - any ideas to get him to eat it? Does this sound like reflux, because of the burping? It seems weird that he would have been fine and then suddenly have reflux problems. I did find some info that said that sinus problems can cause burping, due to swallowing more air.
Thank you for any advice - I have been looking things up on the internet but there is so much conflicting information out there, it is hard to weed through it.
Re: Please help diagnose my DS (reflux? stomach virus?)
Hi!
I read your post awhile ago in the morning and now coming back to see if anyone responded... I guess not...I really don't have any advice/idea either.
Any chance he's just burping from the cold? Ethan does this a lot too when his nose is stuffed up.
Does he seem to be in pain when he's burping/throwing up? Can they test it somehow to see if there is some kind of a bacteria in his tummy causing all of this?
Sorry you guys are going through this, hope he's better soon!
LanaM - You are so sweet. Thank you. I am hoping he is just burping from the cold, but last night he was saying "Mommy, why does it still hurt when I burp?" I feel so bad for him. I figured it was a shot in the dark posting on here - it's not like it's a common thing. His Ped was basically stumped and just said "well, that's strange." Not helpful.
I actually got an appt with a gastro doc, just to rule out anything serious. He had bad reflux as an infant. He was miserable until he was put on Prevacid.
If he gets better, I'll cancel the appt with the GI doctor.
