BFing mamas, a question....

I'm below my prepregnancy weight, to the point where my pants are falling off me. I'd like to buy some new pants but dh seems to think ill gain weight when I stop bFing. I plan on letting the boys self wean, but what is your experience in this? I have an odd body shape (I'm snapped like an 11 year old boy!!) so the pants that for me aren't exactly cheap...

Re: BFing mamas, a question....

  • I did gain some weight back when I stopped BFing.  I was about 8 pounds below my PP weight at the height of my BFing days (around 5ish months PP).  I weaned at around 6 months (slowly) and gained about 5 pounds back.  I ate like a horse while I was breastfeeding to make up for all the calories burned to feed two babies plus myself.  Unfortunatley, I got used to eating pizza and fries and didn't want to give it up when I stopped burning all those calories.  If you are committed to scaling back on your intake as you scale back on your BFing, you might not gain anything back.  I was just a human hoover :)

  • My two cents, if you are planning on letting the boys self wean, I would get at least one pair.I was in a similar place at 6 months and now at a year I'm still breastfeeding and still below myPp weight and it's so so nice to have that one pair of pants that fits!
  • Not sure if this helps since I haven't nursed twins yet.  I nursed my boys for 14 and 16 months and did not gain weight when I stopped nursing.

  • I had the same experience and pinned the waist of my pants (sizes 4 and 6) for the whole year that I breastfed.  I finally gave in a few months after I stopped breastfeeding and bought a few pairs of smaller pants (size 2) for work when I found I was keeping the weight off pretty well.

It's now been a year since I stopped breastfeeding.  The weight has come back a little (as I hoped it would), I no longer need the pins in my bigger pants, and those smaller pants are getting a little snug.

Long story short, I think you should go ahead and get some smaller clothes.  I wish I had just worn pants that fit properly all along.  I'm sure I'll never be that skinny again, and I should have lived it up! : )

  • The boys are in the process of self-weaning.  We currently only nurse once a day, before bed time.  I haven't gained any weight back so far.
