pedi referred for psychiatrist consult for anxiety/developmental concerns?

I'm curious has anyone had a psych consult for a 3 yr old?

I contacted my pedi w/ some concerns we have about our son related to behavior, I am not surprised she referred us for a consult but i was expecting a developmental/EI type of referral, not a psychiatrist? After I was describing it all, she seemed to sort of move toward anxiety, whereas I guess I was thinking developmental/SPD type things even though I know he meets very few things on those assessments...and in thinking about it it does seem to make sense...

anyone had a LO w/ some anxiety or an eval for it?

Ex of some of the things we were concerned about (and we are aware that many of them are sort of typical 3 yr old behavior, it just seems excessive to us & even my mom who spent a week with us thought maybe we should talk to the pedi about it):  chewing- on fingers/nails, toys/straws (i have chewy sticks for him now that i give to him if i see him doing it); challenges with new situations if they are larger groups or enclosed spaces (such as going on a train, hayride, storytime the first couple times, etc); difficulty getting him to go do things that he loves like pool/beach/museum/zoo- always a fight to get dressed, get out the door, lots of screaming & fighting; continued fighting of going to daycare and crying at dropoff even though he has gone since 5 months old; waking alot in the night, sometimes says he is scared but not always; sensitivity to light when waking from nap/bed to the extent that he has screamed & cried for 30 min on a couple occasions;  when frustrated or angry w/ us for timeout or for not letting him do something, etc, he says things like he wants to hit us, push us down the stairs, out the window, etc. This is obviously very concerning to us but at the same time he is truly never aggressive with anyone, aside from typical kid fighting w/ his sister over toys and has never said those things to anyone but me or MH. He will also say things out of the blue or during some sort of tantrum-y time like I am worried about my sister or I don't want to be late Mommy I don't want to be late...He is also very resistant to PTing and I haven't pushed it.

The reassuring thing is that he does not exhibit any of these behaviors at daycare and we have asked them repeatedly to look out for different things & they always report that he plays nicely, doesn't chew on his fingers or anything while he is there, rarely if ever cries, etc.  He is verbally & socially on target and interacts fine w/ children & adults and uses his imagination a lot, etc.  So I just don't know what to expect here I guess....

Re: pedi referred for psychiatrist consult for anxiety/developmental concerns?

  • Honestly It's just part of an entire evaluation process. MY son has SPD and we had to endure a lot of evals, from EI, ST,OT,PT, neuro and dev peds. The psychiatrist is just another eval.  Sounds pretty appropriate to me.  Also alot of what you are saying sound very typical of SPD.  I would follow thru with these evals, sounds like you are on the right track.
