Long car trip- diaper or not?

DD has been potty trained during the day for 6 months or so. We are still working on nighttime dryness. We are headed out on a long 14 hour drive. Should I diaper or not?

  • No way!  But get a piddle pad to ease your mind.  :)

  • We just potty trained DD1 this summer - she started wearing underwear all day a little over a month ago. The last two weekends we've done road trips and let her stay in undies for the drive - three drives were 3 hours, one was 5.5 hrs. She did GREAT. We stopped once about halfway and let her use the bathroom, and she stayed dry through napping in the car. We were prepared to stop every hour if she told us she needed it, and on a shorter road trip like ours I was fine with it.

For a 14 hour drive, I think I would be tempted to try, especially if she's been day time trained for 6 months. As long as your are prepared to stop often and have a back up plan in case she does have an accident in the car, I would probably go for it.

  • DD had been potty trained for about 4-5 months when we went on a 10 hour road trip. Not one accident. I basically made her go to the potty every time we stopped, even if she said she didn't have to. She did amazing though!

  • Nope, I'd bring a potty, use padding or just be prepared for lots of stops.

  • Another vote for no.  You'll confuse her.

  • Doesn't sound like she'd need it. However I guess I would ask, have you used diaper/pull up for anything else during the 6 months? I know ppl talk about this 'confusion' thing but using a pull up has never confused my DD but that girl can hold it for wayyyy too long so I have the opposite problem. I used them a lot during early PTing for when we were going places and we went on a very long car trip recently & I gave her the option of wearing one 'just in case' and she actually chose to wear it. Never peed in it once. Then on vacay we got a stomach bug & I actually had her wear one for 2 days b/c she was having urgent watery diarrhea and she didn't mind at all...after 2 days I told her her tummy was all better & we were going back to her underwear and she was fine w/ that. I think it depends on the kid w/ that confusion thing to be honest (my DS will be completely different than DD was with the whole experience, since I can't even get him to talk about PTing, he told me yesterday he would "never" do it) but if she doesn't have accidents in general, I'm sure she'll be fine in the car.
  • We have only been training for a month, so he can't hold it that long yet. He pees during the night and sometimes during naps. We've went on several trips this summer and since he falls asleep on long trips we put on a diaper.
