Re: UO Thursday

I have an UO and a confession in one. I hate when people put their shopping carts in parking spaces. My husband and I were sitting in our car with our son and this lady puts her cart right in front of my car. I was already in a bad mood and just had to say something. I try not to be confrontational, but she put her cart right where it could have hit my car. I was nice, but I did get my point across. I take pride in what I have and do not understand why people have no regard for other people's things. I was parked close to where she could have put the cart. Needless to say, she moved the cart.

I totally agree. I got into an argument with my little brother once about this. He didn't put the cart away and so I took it, walked it across the lane, and out it in the corral. He then told me that you don't have to do that because people get paid to collect carts. Uuugh. His ignorance just about killed me.

Now that I drive a nicer car, I am even more aware of/paranoid about this. I think it comes down to just a lack of respect for other people.

I think thats the exception. Just like the cost of living is higher in certain places. My point was people who think having more is better in a wedding situation. Just doesn't seem right or what the "point" of a wedding is supposed to be.

The point of my wedding was to have a big party where I could dress up and be the center of attention.  DH and I both think that marriage is basically just a piece of paper.  We were living together and had our finances together and all that jazz.  The wedding was just a AW party and I spent a good $20,000 on my wedding.  I don't think I spent too much on it because I had over 200 guests and had to feed them all and make sure they had drinks.  That was over half the budget right there.  Add in cake and flowers and the photographer, it's not hard to spend that kind of money.  I don't think I went overboard on my wedding.

My UO: I don't get how spending thousands and thousands of dollars on a wedding is making it more "special." I think this everytime I see wedding shows on TLC, and the brides say, "My final cost is $50,000, my wedding is going to be so special and spectacular!" Um, shouldn't the "specialness" be just from marrying the love of your life, and not trying to get as much glittery and fancy crap poured into a room as you can? I also don't see the point in spending so much. You could have just as great of a wedding for WAY cheaper, and then save all of that other money for you life as newlyweds. Idk, I just don't get the point of expensive weddings. FWIW, our wedding was probably $2,000 tops. But we just got married the two of us on the beach. Very simple and it was amazing and SPECIAL.

I totally agree. We spend 5,000. We had an open bar (we purchased all of the liquor/wine/beer outright and the caterer supplied bartenders) and family style food.  We had A TON of food.  I hate when I see shows like 4 Weddings where their budget is 30,000 and they are complaining about not having money for a honeymoon.  Our honeymoon was probably 1500 bucks and we went to ME and it was amazing.  Also, if your budget is 30,000 why not spend 20 on the wedding and have an amazing 10,000 honeymoon?! Why is that not doable? ALSO! They have this ginormous budget but then have a buffet and a cash bar--it makes me wonder where the heck all that money went.

I also think there is a major "trend" right now of people wanting a WEDDING and not a MARRIAGE.  There is a drastic difference between the two.

I agree where it is more about a wedding than a marriage. I had a friend who got engaged and was more excited about planning a wedding than actually BEING married. I was excited to plan my wedding, but I was more excited to be my husbands wife. :-

we were more excited about our honeymoon in Hawaii then the wedding itself. I think our venue alone was $2000, and that was a discounted rate as I negotiated with every vendor since I was one of the few getting married in my area at the beginning of February. I think we spent $25k for wedding and honeymoon.

We went to a wedding a few months before ours at this fabulous hotel in DE, probably $60k affair and were not impressed.

I dislike Christmas music and decorations before black Friday. Love me some mint choc chip especially with Oreo cookies in it. I don't like being sung to on my birthday. I think pets are good practice for babies, but nowhere near the same amount of work.

I hate discount stores like Marshalls, TJ Maxx, etc.

The clothing is so jam packed into the racks and I feel like I get so frustrated trying to find something decent, and then when I do, its either got a stain on it, a rip, its on the wrong hanger and instead of the M I wanted, its really a size XXS and wont even fit over my gigantic head..  this list goes on!

Stores like that are such a cluster-f*ck.  I try really hard to like them... I just cant take the madness and have zero patience to fluff through all of the crappy clothing, to try to find one semi-decent peice.

I can't STAND those stores. The potential bargins are just not worth it to me.

I had a yellow car before kids, and I really, really miss it. I don't like all yellow cars though, it has to be a certain color of yellow.

I will never agian shop at bargain stores.  I bought a frame from Marshalls and it had powderpost beetles living in the frame.  Basically they are like termites.  NEVER AGAIN!!!!!!!

  • Lol, my wedding cost 30k and I didn't have a honeymoon.  But it was exactly what I always dreamed it would be since I was a little girl, we had an amazing time, and it was worth every penny.  And I agree, it would have been cheaper if we had it some place else or did some things different, but it was what I wanted.

I spent more than $2500 on my cake.  That's because I am a glutton who wanted a Duff Goldman Charm City Cake, and I got it.  And it was the most delicious thing ever. My mom ate an entire layer, and DH plans to never forgive her.

  • My UO: I try not to openly judge other parents. You don't know how others were raised and a million other things about their beliefs. BUT...if you post something on FB and it is dangerous to your child, I WILL call you out on it. I will try and be nice about it, but I will call you out. And, if you try and defend said stupidity, I will judge....harshly.

example: I have a friend who's little boy was born in December. He's a bruiser, but he's only 7 months old. Last week, she posted vacation pictures. One picture was her son in his huge forward facing car seat watching Elmo on the DVD player. Awww cute...but WTF???

    Our conversation went like this....

me: Aww.. so cute. He's getting so big! How old is he now??

her: Yeah...he's 7 months and 25 pounds!! My little chunker!!

Then, I PMd her because I'm not going to call someone out in public.

Me: He is a big boy! :) Can you rear face that car seat? He really shoud rear face until he's at least 1.

her: yes, but it says you can forward face at 25 pounds, and he likes to see us and Elmo.

me: Im sure he does. But, legally and for safety reasons, he needs to turn back around. Just trying to keep your little man safe. 25lbs is just the minimum weight for forward facing in that seat.

her: he's fine like this. he'd freak out if we turned him back around. He's so social

I stopped then, because her mind is made up and I was going to get snarky...but, JUDGE JUDGE JUDGE!!!!

Your convenience should not trump your child's safety. You wouldn't strap them improperly into a rollercoaster...so why is it ok in a car that moves 70+mph???

Also, the directors of Teen Mom should make sure those babies are properly strapped in. I can't stand to see how poorly those babies are restrained!!

  • Is it sad that I got all excited that my post was actually quoted? Yeah, I am pathetic like that.....

I HATE Christmas. I fake it because of the kids and try to make it as exciting and special as possible, but the entire time I am counting down the days until my first son's birthday. The whole season just depresses me. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE to see how excited and happy my kids are, and that does make me happy, it's just so bittersweet thinking about someone who isn't there. (but I never admit that to anyone, not even dh)

  • In New Mexico it's chile, not chili.  Restaurants that are not New Mexican, but caterer to the tourists sometimes, write chili on the menu when they mean chile.   Chili is a totally different thing with beans, meat and a tomato base.  Chile is basically a rue using the chile plant or the plant it's self.

  • Because DH just did it, I'll share another with you. I hate high fives. It makes it exponentially worse when you say "high five" before requesting the high five. They are awkward and pointless. At the end of a pee-wee baseball game? Sure! Telling me that I have to re-paint the entire trim on a room, but we'll "get it done?" No!

And with that, I hate hand shaking. It's stupid and also awkward. I'm not a germophobe, but there's no reason for me to touch you when I've known you for all of 3 seconds.

ETA: Annnnnd he just did it again to congratulate me on finally staking the tomato plants.

I think this really depends on where you live.  In my area, it is not possible to have a wedding in that price range unless you DIY the entire thing as like a backard bbq with an ipod and no photographer.

I spent more than that on my florist alone.

I agree. I spent more than that on flowers too. Weddings in my area are REALLY expensive.

Yep, here too.  I won't lie, a lot of money was spent on our wedding and it was lovely; however, I don't think that made it more special than other weddings.  It was the way we wanted it and was our style.  Plus, my parents are crazy and had been planning it in their heads for 28 years Big Smile

I say this in light of all of this Chik-fil-A stuff.  No, I don't think the government should penalize them for their views (which is not happening)--THAT would be a violation of the First Amendment.  People choosing to not eat there anymore is not.

Its the mayors of cities who say they will ban CFA from their city that crosses a line.  I can say that I won't eat there, but the Mayor of Whatevertown can't ban them based on the owner's statement or religious views.  To enact such a ban violates the right to free speech and freedom of religion.

Our wedding was done on a budget of about $10,000.  We had almost 200 people.  We severed paella from a world famous restaurant in Santa Fe.  The owner wasn't even going to be the chief, but some how he ended up doing it.  I got the salad, appetizers and the main meal for $21 per person!  We hired them to do the alcohol.

We had an indoor/outdoor wedding at a state forest lodge.  The state had basically been on fire for the entire month, so the forest was closed.  They opened the lodge for the wedding so the area was deserted!  It started to rain right before the outdoor ceremony for the first time that season.  It stopped right before the ceremony, started again as we went inside for dinner and stopped once again when it was time to cut the cake and dance.

My dad is super critical about everything.  He said it was the best wedding he had been too.  Including my little sister's wedding that five years before, but cost over $25,000 for just the day of the wedding.

DH is yellow car guy.  He has a 2004 Anniversary edition Mustang GT and although I used to think yellow car people were assclowns, that car drives amazing and I feel like a bad ass in it.  He also only drives it occasionally, so it looks brand new, so it also makes me feel like we got a new car when we're in it lol

I love Christmas but I have limited tolerance for Christmas music.  I can only listen to it while doing Christmas things like baking cookies, decorating, etc.  The radio stations that play it nonstop from Thanksgiving on drive me out of my mind!

I had the 40th anniversary mustang too, but mine was in deep shadow gray. I sold it 2 years ago to get a car that is safe to drive in the Winter. I miss that car.

Okay, MInt chip is amazing- I can't believe we have to defend that.

I love Ross and Marshalls, but I hate how messy they are. The worst though, is forever 21. Way too many clothes for the racks. You can't take one thing off without 5 other things falling. I really don't feel like bending down to pick them up.

I agree that weddings don't have to be a HUGE expense, but if you have it or people are willing to do it for you, I don't see a problem. I think ours was 11thousand? It was in my Aunts really nice backyard (ceremony at church) and we made all the food and got a great deal on flowers, but we still spent a good chunk of money and I think it made a difference. It was just as nice as some of the 20thousand dollar weddings I've been too. (Nicer:))

I hate the word "Mommy" too. Yuck. Mama or Mom. That is it.

Okay, my UO is: If you have lighter hair naturally, but color your hair dark, keep up on that shiit because blonde roots with black hair is GROSS. And, fill in your eyebrows.

I agree, that is the distinction (and that is here in Boston where the mayor said that).  Most people aren't getting that though, so whenever I see someone talking about the 1st amendment in this context, they are not understanding where the 1st Amendment actually comes in (which is exactly where you pointed it out).

I think a major part of this for me is just that I'm over the whole chik-fil-a thing now.

Even worse than yellow cars...PEACH CARS.

Here's an unpopular one: I hate the word "mommy." I'm cool with others who love it and use it, but it literally skeeves me out somehow when someone uses it to refer to me. I'm really working hard on teaching the girls to call me mama.

Zomg, this. Whenever I see a post with a title like "BFing Mommies!" or "2+ Mommies come in," I secretly wish it would be deleted by the mods so that I don't have to see the word anymore. Its so childish.

So glad you and SteelCity made me feel less alone here.
