Pregnant after 35

How long did it take you to conceive?

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the board and I'd like some feedback on how long it took you to conceive? I will be 34 this month. Ideally, I would like to wait another 6 months before trying to conceive due to financial reasons. However, because of my age I feel like I have to jump on this right away or else it might take years....any feedback please?? Thanks

Re: How long did it take you to conceive?

  • Everyone is different, but when I got pregnant with my son, I was 34.  It took 2 cycles.  With my daughter, I was technically 36, but I turned 37 the day or two after I got the BFP.  (So I would say I was 37).  That took one cycle.

  • We started trying in the Fall, and I was 36. It took one cycle, but we had a miscarriage. When we tried again a couple of months later, I had turned 37, and, again, it took one cycle.

  • Started trying at 34.5; conceived a little over 2 years later via IVF. You really don't know until you try but I looked and seemed perfectly fertile. I wouldn't wait if I were you.

  • Got pregnant 1st month, right around my 35th birthday, with DS. Got pregnant the 2nd month of trying for this baby at 38.

  • I am not on this board but wanted to give another opinion since there were a lot of 2-3 cycles above.  I am at the 2 yr mark and cannot have a baby. No 2nd line ever.  My eggs are just bad (see siggy). I am moving on to donor eggs. I was 36 when I started trying.  Everyone is different and you never know what side of the fence you will fall. I never expected this to happen to me.

  • For DD - 1 year (varied cycles since I was irregular). For this pregnancy, I'm not sure, but since my delivery in October, I have had 5 cycles. GL to you!

  • I was 36 when I got pregnant with my son.  It took 1 year (I had 1 miscarriage  during that year before getting pregnant with my son).  I am now 39. It took us 14 months to get pregnant this time around (that included 6 cycles with clomid, 3 medicated IUIs and finally IVF which resulted in my pregnancy).

  • My husband and I decided to stop using birth control in late December of 2010. By mid-May of 2011 I was pregnant. It is possible that I very early miscarried before that, as I had a really weird period in February of 2011 (started at the wrong time, SUPER emotional, bled then stopped then was bleeding again within a week). We didn't take any unusual steps to get pregnant, no checking for ovulation, no scheduling intercourse, nothing like that. I was 39 when we conceived.

  • We took three cycles. Well, depends on how you define. We stopped actively TTA for a few cycles before that, I count the last three because we were making an effort to get it right. We didn't do much, except I paid attention to CM. I had my LMP a few days after my 35th birthday.

  • It took us almost ten years.  This is our first pregnancy, no other positives since we started trying in 2002.  We had actually given up a year and a half ago after being told I would probably never be able to conceive at that point.

  • Took us 6 cycles (I'm 36).
    Lilypie First Birthday tickers image
  • When I was 37, took 4 cycles.  I miscarried.  Waited 2 or 3 months (forgot which), and then pregnant first cycle.  I had already seen the fertility specialist and he prescribed progesterone for me.  Without it, I probably wouldn't haven't gotten pregnant.  At 39, we tried for 7 months and then pregnant.  I didn't do a good job on the progesterone this time, and the first month I did, we got pregnant.  So even though it was relatively easy for us, I would agree with some of the others and you just never know.

You have to weigh your choices.  GL!

  • 6 years at 27, 4 yrs at 31, 6wks at 32, 18mo at 36, 2 mo at 38, 8 mo at 40 - clearly, it doesn't necessarily follow that older moms have a harder time conceiving. I think it really is such an individual thing.

  • We started just shy of my 38th bday (I will be 41 in Oct).  After 6 months we started taking clomid. After 2 failed clomid months we started seeing a RE.  In 2.5 years we had 8 failed IUI's and 1 failed IVF.   We got pg on our own the month after the IVF failed.

It took us a total of 32 cycles to get pregnant.

  • I just turned 39.  I finally got pregnant on our 9th cycle, after lots of testing and a hysteroscopy.

IMO, a few months won't make at difference at your age, and you want to be in a good financial position to undertake something like this.  If you are worried, see if you can get some blood tests to determine your fertility/egg quality.

This time around I went straight to the RE, and it took 3 cycles. I am 37.

  • I haven't read all of the other posts, so this point may have been made already.  But here's the thing.  You should not take comfort in the fact that a bunch of over 35 women conceived easily.  Nor should you be despondent because there are just as many who take years or are never able to conceive.  None of our situations tells you anything about your own fertility.  There's just no way for you to know how easy or hard it will be for YOU to conceive until you try and/or get fertility testing done.

  • I was off the pill for 3 years (just because I was sick of taking it) so I was actively counting and recording my cycles.  We started TTC when I was 39 and SO was 40. It took us 4 cycles.

  • Well - if you count my miscarriages (which seem to have been age-related), it took us almost two years!  However, each separate pregnancy took about 2-4 cycles, if I am remembering.  I have extremely regular cycles, which I think helps.

  • Popping in randomly from the infertility board.

I am 35 and I started TTC when I was 33. After 2 years and 2 failed IVF cycles, we are still trying to have our first child. I was diagnosed with diminished ovarian reserve at age 34 when I went for fertility testing, and IVF has a VERY low success rate for my kind, sadly. Its just bad luck, and I am in the minority. I don't want to rain on your parade at ALL. Quite the opposite! I want you to be pregnant the SECOND you are ready.

Lesson is that we never know how fertile we are until we try to conceive. There is no formula. When you start trying, if you aren't pregnant after 6 months, go in for testing. Don't wait the full year. You will be close enough to 35 by then to do so with a little push. MH and I pushed for testing in our 9th month of TTC, and I am so glad we did.

Most women at our age have absolutely no problem at all, but there is a subset- a small fraction of us who are just unlucky. I thought I should just give you the information in the event of an emergency.

I wish you all the luck in the world as you start on this journey. I hope its fast, easy and FUN! XOXO

  • I personally would not wait. While it might not be the perfect time right now for you, what if you wait, only to find out you (or your dh, you never know...) have issues?

I was 34 when I got pregnant, after 8 cycles of trying (charting, OPK's, well timed sex). During that time, I had some b/w that revealed I had deminished ovarian reserve and that I most likely would need some form of fertility tx to get pregnant.

I got VERY, very, lucky, and got pregnant and stayed pregnant. And, I have a friend that got pregnant at 34 the first cycle of trying, like some of the women on here. However, I think there also is a lot of women that need treatment, or have many miscarriages and such in the over 35 group. Knowing all I know now, I wish we had started to TTC younger.

We put it off due to vacations, money, timing (my husband is in the military) and thankfully got lucky, but I know that we were the minority for those with my dx.

  • We started trying when I was almost 33 (we had been married for about 4 months). It took 3 years for me to get PG with my first. I was 36 when I had her. This one took 1 cycle. Well, two. The first was a c/p. I had been diagnosed with PCOS before my first PG and we were just about to start with the infertility route, when I got PG with my daughter. I'll be 38 when this baby is born.
