Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Group B strep

Hi,

I gave birth really fast and so the midwife only got to administer one round of antibiotics and only about 45 minutes before I delivered.  When they sent us home they told us to watch for "late onset GBS" in the baby which can occur up to 3 months after birth.  Baby is now 5 weeks old and I am just paranoid about her developing this.  The symptoms are lethargy and poor eating and sometimes fever and can lead to menigitis.

Has anyone out there have experience with this?  I'm just so worried i would miss the symptoms or not notice them until it is too late.

Re: Group B strep

  • I understand your paranoia...my baby boy came so fast that I wasn't able to get any antibiotics in my system.  My best recommendation is just to keep an eye on the baby.  Meningitis is scary, but just keep an eye on it so if it develops you can catch it early, and pray like crazy that nothing happens!  Sorry I don't have better advice, but I hope it makes you feel better knowing you aren't alone!  I also like to tell myself that because my guy came so quickly (minutes after my water broke) that he most likely didn't have much exposure to the group b strep.

  • I had the same thing - only had time to have one round of antibiotics...and no one said anything to me about this! They said they wanted to keep him a full 48 hours in the hospital to keep an eye on him, but they didn't tell me to watch for anything at home! Guess I'll go do some research now...

  • DS was also born very quickly so I only had time for one round of antibiotics. We had to stay at the hospital for 48 hours, but my OB/pedi never said to watch for any late onset.

  • This (from CDC website) may put your mind at ease: "Unfortunately, the method recommended to prevent early-onset disease (giving women who are group B strep positive antibiotics through the vein (IV) during labor) does not prevent late-onset disease. Although rates of early-onset disease have declined, rates of late-onset disease have remained fairly stable since 1990. At this time, a strategy has not yet been identified for preventing late-onset group B strep disease." So this seems to be saying that antibiotics during labor only prevents early onset GBS so your baby is no more at risk than any other.

  • Thanks, I hope that is what it means.  I just wonder why I was warned about it?  I'm going to ask again at my 6 week check up.
