Questions about Mylanta/Maalox

Today the pedi diagnosed DS with reflux and gave us a RX for Zantac. He also said I can give him liquid Maalox or Mylanta to ease the pain and discomfort until the Zantac takes effect. He said it didn't matter what strength...just give a teaspoon or so at a time as needed. Of course, both Publix and Walgreens are out of both brands of antacid, and Publix said it's on backorder. (Why on earth??) Anyway, I found a generic version but I don't know if it is exactly the same. The active ingredients are: Aluminum hydroxide, Magnesium hydroxide, and Simethicone. If you give antacids to your LO, are these the same ingredients in what you are giving? About how often do you give it, and do you put it in a bottle or just use a dropper?

Re: Questions about Mylanta/Maalox

  • I don't have ours accessible right now, but I believe those sound like the right ingredients.  We also found that all of the stores are out of Maalox right now and everyone has it on backorder.  Even most of the store brands were sold out.  We did find the CVS brand and it said it compares to Maalox on the front of the bottle.

My daughter hasn't taken a bottle yet, so we just put it in the syringe and squirt a little at a time towards the back of her cheek.  It takes a while to get her to swallow all of it.  Fortunately, it seems as if her Pepcid is starting to work (Zantac didn't) so we haven't had to use the Maalox in a couple days.  I think the maximum strength comes in cherry.  Our pedi didn't say anything about what strength we could use so I just went with regular, which only comes in mint and she hates it.

It took 3 1/2 long years, but we finally got our little miracle!
