April 2012 Moms

I think you guys were a little rough

For talking about not hating, you were so hateful in your responses.  It actually has really upset me.  Regardless of if you agree with what was said, people deserve a constructive response.

The way people ganged up on her is more like bullying than 'educating' (as someone put in a different thread).  The goal of copying and pasting the thread is no more than to humiliate the poster.  That is bullying.

In my eyes, you dropped to the level of the hate you were condemning.  That is so disappointing.

Flame on if you want.  I just thought we were better than that.

  • I missed the post, but I agree with your statement in general.

  • People didn't "gang up." There were a number of people who, individually, were offended by PooDanga and Scline's comments. I also didn't think the responses were that bad, considering.

eta: also not really a pot calling kettle black situation, as you want to make it. Calling someone ignorant for being ignorant isn't the same as promoting discrimination.

  • I prefer to be above name calling during a heated debate.  I do realize some of that went on but there were some of us who were just debating back and forth - not everyone was being a bully.

I also respectfully disagree with you.  There are some topics that are hot button issues. This topic has been talked about on this board before so you know that there are a lot of people who have very strong opinions about the topic and they are opposite of what you believe.  If you don't want to get "flamed" don't post.  If you do post put on your BGP and don't DD because you don't like the responses!

  • I find that alot of things on here that are meant as comparing opinions get blown up into full on fights that get very heated. I get people are passionate, I get its a message board and people shouldnt get butthurt... but sometimes the responses are far more hurtful or flameful than the OP. I find it intertesting that other boards know this board based on c&p's. This has nothing to do with anything.. but I lurked the 1st tri board today. It made me upset that people who arent pregnant or have 1,2,10 kids post rudely on the typical first tri posts. Some of these girls have never been thru this. They have the same beginner posts we all did. Why flame them?

This. There's no point in being hateful (I didn't get to read the post, so I don't  know what all went down) but she knew where it was most likely going, and to DD was lame.

But I did dream I met Obama the other night. He had on lipstick, so he would look better on camera. Haha, it made him look creepy in person, like his skin was pale and his lips were too bright.  Not that I think my dream was controversial or anything :-).

Ok....Really?  Because a part of that thread (I only got through page 2) was people calling OP out for not understanding how institutional racism has shaped a particular community.  If you are going to "teach" her about that, shouldn't you also recognize that she may have been raised in a community that prized normalcy, "traditional values", and the "literalism" of the Bible which doesn't allow her to easily comprehend the gay rights movement.  Change is hard and normally requires exposure to thoughtful discussions and multicultural situations.

I don't think the comments were awful, but I think there is an assumption that WASPs don't have to overcome any ingrained education to become tolerant and inclusive.

  • I'm going to come out of lurking today and say that I agree that the original post got a little rough.  PooDanga said some foolish things, but people are entitled to their opinions and she chose to post her thoughts in a public forum knowing that there would be consequences of that action.

Today has been CRAZY on here ladies!!

I've noticed that on the first tri board, as well. It happened when we were there too. It's a weird phenomenon....DUH that first time moms ( and some second timers!) are going to have the normal first tri questions. It makes me sad and feel bad too...especially when i remember back to the excitement and millions of questions I had. It's ridiculous to me that they get flamed...unless the question is obviously ridic.

    Well said.

The original post was rough in the first place.  As I mentioned above the hate had me in tears.  I also think that some people need to be called out on there ignorance.  PooDanga and Scline's have no idea how hurtful the things they said are.  I hope they know now.

True, and some of the reasons are similar and some different.  For some minority groups, I think there is a fear that including the gay population would make them even more prone to bigotry.  There is also a strong religious objection amongst the African-American and devout Catholic Latino populations.  It isn't just a white-people problem.  But, I think it is often painted as one.  And that it is worse to be a white homophobe than an African-American homophobe.  Truth is, all homophobia is sad and wrong.  But public shaming without understanding isn't going to change their opinions.

Sorry, you can't put something out there like that about minorities and "special treatment" and all and not expect a backlash. If you get flamed so what? Read, learn, try to walk away with some new knowledge. At the end of the day, we are internet strangers. Hopefully she did read something new that she didn't know before and can implement that into her real life. Instead of the "those" and "them" attitude she has.

I agree with you. I was just stating that people would be a lot more tolerant and educated if they didn't get jumped on for their ignorance. Obviously, someone is more likely to listen if they are being talked to rather than yelled at (called a bigot, racist, etc). Sure, those names could be true, I'm not saying they are, but talking and debating calmly teaches more tolerance than anything.

I don't think the comments were awful, but I think there is an assumption that WASPs don't have to overcome any ingrained education to become tolerant and inclusive.

How someone was raised is an excuse. You don't have to take a class to learn how to treat other people with the same respect you want to be afforded to you. The "Golden Rule" is in the Bible and she said she was Christian so she has been exposed to the idea. Also if you ever got to MY posts before it was DD you would have seen that I did try to take the time out and educate her on the origins of things as "Black History Month" and "gay pride."

Again, I didn't see anyone being hateful towards her or demeaning but like I said, it was deleted while I was on page 3 reading.

Sorry to continue beating a dead horse, but I want to make something very clear.

Education and upraising are not excuses to act like a bigot.  To encourage people to stop acting like bigots, however, you can not just say "you are wrong."  I am in higher education and strongly believe in the liberal arts.  I emphasize understanding other people's worldviews.  If you want to argue that X is wrong, your argument has to be based in fact and worldview.

I think mikehoncho's post is brilliant.  Most white people don't see the privilege they live in.  They put their experiences and worldviews on to minorities and expect the outcomes to be the same.  Without experience with minorities or extensive liberal arts education, this is a very hard mindset to change.  This is why colleges tout their diversity and why liberal arts colleges often require some sort of multicultural experience.

People don't stop being racist/bigots/violently anti-religion/violently pro-religion because someone on the internet says "you are wrong."  They stop when they learn to evaluate people and experiences in a different way.  That involves rational discussion, abstract thinking, and varied life experience.  It also involves people acknowledging that change is hard, life is cruel, and that someone's life experience isn't wrong (it just isn't complete.)
