I'm searching for some great Southern style desserts! Care to share some of your favorites? I'm going to make a Caramel Cake in the next few days, it sounds really good! Help a Yankee out!
I too am a Yankee, but went with dh in March to Charleston. We ate at Hominy Grill and had Buttermilk pie. I looked up their recipe (apparently the use more lemon than traditionally used) and made it for easter. It was a huge hit and will now be a yearly tradition. YUM

Ok, what is pig pickin' cake, derby pie, and southern hospitality pie??
Thanks for all of the suggestions! It's making me hungry...
Pig pickin cake is dh's (also a Yankee) favorite. It is usually served at bbq's/pig roasts...hence the name. It is sooo good.
1 box (18.25 Oz. Box) Yellow Cake Mix1 stick Margarine, Softened1 can (14 Oz. Can) Mandarin Oranges, Drained, 1/2 Cup Juice Reserved4 whole Eggs1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
FOR THE TOPPING:
1 package (4 Oz. Box) Vanilla Instant Pudding Mix1 can (20 Oz. Can) Crushed Pineapple, Juice Reserved1/2 cup Powdered Sugar1 tub of Cool WhipExtra Mandarin Orange Slices, For Garnish
Preparation Instructions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. For the cake, combine cake mix, margarine, 1/2 cup juice from the mandarin oranges, eggs, and vanilla. Beat for four minutes on medium-high. Add drained oranges and beat again until pieces are broken up and small. Pour batter into greased and floured 9 x 13 inch baking pan and bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until golden brown and set. Remove from oven and cool completely. If desired, turn out cake onto a large platter. (I don't)
Once cake is cool, blend juice from drained pineapples with the vanilla pudding mix. Add powdered sugar and mix, then mix in whipped topping. Stir in drained pineapple. Spread on cooled cake and refrigerate several hours.
To serve, cut cake into squares and top each square with a mandarin orange slice.
Derby Pie is basically a pecan pie with chocolate chips. A little bourbon is optional but recommended.
Hospitality Pie is a frozen pie that has a frozen mix of condensed milk, cool whip, cream cheese in a graham crust topped with coconut and pecans that you toast in butter. drizzled with caramel and chocolate sauce.
This post has seriously made me want to bake! I also vote red velvet cake (got to have homemade cream cheese icing!) and banana pudding. I've never heard of pig pickin' cake, but the derby pie that I've had is kind of a mix between a brownie/cookie mixed in with pecans and chocolate chips. My mom called it Kentucky derby pie.
