Hey ladies - I just got a call from my doctor regarding some recent bloodwork and they've diagnosed me with hypothyroidism. I was curious if any of you had this same diagnosis, what you did to get pregnant (i.e. thyroid meds, etc.), what you're doing while you're pregnant, and what other health issues it caused for you.
I should point out that I like my doctor a lot and trust her unbelievably, but I'm just a bit overwhelmed. Thyroid issues have caused a lot of problems on my mom's side of the family with fertility and other health issues.
Re: Hypothyroidism (from TTGP)
I was diagnosed with it in college around 5 years ago. It's CRUCIAL that you take your medicine. Not just for fertility-sake, but because I know that I feel a world of difference when I take it. Plus, it helps abate weight-gain. I've been overweight most of my life so when my doctor but me on that she also put me on metformin which helps control blood sugar. It's helped me lose a good amount of weight and control my weight better.
If you're regular with your period (not your family, you) don't worry too much. If not, talk with your dr about potential fertility issues early on. I know they'll probably need to increase my dosage during my pregnancy (I'm a FTM and still in my 1st trimester) but just trust your doctor on this. I had a dr when we lived elsewhere who tried to diagnose me with everything under the sun (endometriosis, infertility, etc) but none of it was accurate. If you trust your doctor, stick with the synthroid or whatever she puts you on for your thyroid.
I was diagnosed about 5 years ago and made sure my levels were under control before trying because the thyroid hormone is such an important part of pregnancy. Especially in the first trimester. I got my levels checked 2 weeks after BFP even though I had just had them done in April. I'll be going back every 8 weeks or so to be sure they are on track. I take 100 mcg Levothyroxin to keep my levels in check.
I think the most important thing is to be sure that your levels are where they are supposed to be. Hypothyroidism left unchecked can cause a lot of health issues, including miscarriage.
Good luck!

I'm sorry for the DX =( Hypothyroidism runs in my family. My doc likes to keep an eye on it and made sure that it was under 2 for TTC. Synthroid can help a lot in keeping your numbers steady and where they should be. Do you know what your TSH number was and your Free T4?
I highly suggest seeing an RE. They can better help you with this especially while TTC and making sure you remain healthy and when that BFP comes (soon I hope!), keeping baby healthy as well.
Good luck!

Thank you very much for your input. Although I'm not overweight, I could easily stand to loose 15 lbs or so, but I've been a gym rat and healthy eater (with good portion control) for the last 5 years. My weight just hit a plateau and it's so hard for me to lose weight whenever I do gain any. There are a lot of symptoms that I just thought were "quirks" of mine, and my weight was one of them. I just thought it might have been genetics.
I don't remember - she called it in for me this morning, but I'll pick up the prescription tonight. She said she would start me in the mid-range of dosage and check my levels in 4 weeks to see if it needs adjusting.
Thank you for your help!
Sorry, guys, I'm not a master of the multi-quote in one post.
First of all, wiggles, I'm so happy to see you over here.
Secondly, I don't know the levels - she just said they weren't good at all. I don't think I knew what to ask. I'm writing a more detailed post about the visit in TTGP because there was a lot of other things going on in the appointment itself, but I think I'm just more worried about the hypothyroid since my aunt and my cousin had fertility issues because of it. I also think my aunt had fatal health issues because of not taking care of it properly.
Thanks! It can cause fertility issues but getting the numbers in balance can almost eliminate them. My mom had 4 kids without any issues and she has had hypothyroidism since she was a teenager. It sounds like your doc is doing the right thing. As PP said, you will notice a huge difference in the way you feel once you get your numbers where they need to be. I wish the best of luck and will stalk your post on TTGP

I have PCOS and Hashimotos Thyroiditis.. which has now turned to hypo thyroidism...
My RE strongly believed that bringing down my levels would increase our chances of getting preg / treatment working at the best of its ability. Thyroid is linked to getting pregnant (in a hormone sense) since it is an endocrine disorder.
I agree with PP that taking your medicine EVERYDAY is CRUCIAL... it really makes a difference if you skip a dose.
Once pregnant you'll have to be monitored every 6 weeks as well- they have changed my dose once so far- and are thinking the next visit it may change again.
Good luck!
