Anyones toddler have an oral fixation?

DD has an oral fixation.  She always has something in her mouth.  She chews constantly on straws from her sippy cups.  She always has her fingers in her mouth, not sucking them, they're just in there.  She uses a paci at night only but she's addicted to it.  I am constantly telling her to take her fingers out of her mouth and to stop chewing her straws but she just continues to do it.  She does it without even realizing it.  How can I curb this?  She doesn't put other stuff in her mouth though, like toys or the like.  Its just her fingers and straws and paci at night.

  • Is she getting her two year molars in?

P is and he constantly has his fingers in his mouth or his lovey. DH was reading to him last night and by the time they were done, his lovey was soaked, from him chewing on it (a lighting mcqueen small plush car). He is a thumb sucker though, so that is always in his mouth at nap and nightime.

  • YES! It's SO ANNOYING!!!

Unlike your DD, DS puts EVERYTHING and ANYTHING in his mouth! Fingers, straws, all toys, books, other inanimate objects, EVERYTHING! I'm scared to death he's going to put something in his mouth and choke on it (like he found my husband's gaming dice...I found out he had them once they were in his mouth).

He is just a very oral child. He's had all of his teeth since he was 2 (he's 2.5) so he's not teething. I once worked at a school where there was a 4 year old girl who put everything in her mouth still! DS will probably be the same way.

  • Jack is the same way. It drives me crazy. I am constantly telling him to take whatever toy usually a train, tractor, or stuffed animal out of his mouth.  He doesn't suck his thumb or take a pacifier. It's gotten worse lately and I can see one lower 2yr molar coming in. He's had a drool rash at the lower corner of his mouth for about two months now. His doctor told us to do 50/50 Neosporin and hydracortozone cream before bed and cover it with vaseline.
