What to wear?

I have the option of not wearing the hospital gown while in labor which is very appealing to me. I feel like this is a stupid question but I am at a loss for what to wear! I know I will wear a sports bra but what on the bottom?  My MW said I will obviously need to be OK with throwing it away so maybe just a cheap stretchy skirt?  Or would it actually just be easier to wear the fugly gown?

Re: What to wear?

  • My doula has recommended a cheap, stretchy tube dress from somewhere like Ross/TJ Maxx. That way you won't have straps or anything get in the way of cords/IVs, and you can just pull down the top for immediate skin to skin with baby. Then pull up the top over baby to keep them warm. We'll see if it works!

That makes great sense - thank you!

  • I wore a stretchy black skirt from Old Navy, a basic nursing bra, and a t shirt. It was much better than wearing the hospital gown like I did with DS.

I know i'm the odd man out but I actually liked the gown.  The ones on the maternity ward were like old t-shirt material.  I had slippers and a cozy robe since the floor tends to be cold and changed into my clothes after cleaning up after the fact.

I just plan on wearing the gown.  Honestly it gives me one less thing to have to worry about deciding on before the baby comes.  Also, I really dont want to throw out any of my clothes.  Why not ruin the hospital gown instead of your own stuff???  But you have to do whatever makes you feel comfortable.

I think I am going to stick with the gown while in labor but I might consider something like this for afterwards! I remember that I found the gown kind of annoying when it came time to nurse.

  • I wore a soft/stretchy sleep type bra on top and just held a sheet around my waist for the bottom. I got to the hospital wearing soft comfy shorts but I took those off as soon as I got to my room because I wanted to know how far dilated I was.

  • I didn't mind the hospital gown, but you could also find a short, soft robe to wear. That way it could be opened for skin to skin and nursing, but keep you warm and covered too.

  • I wore a nursing bra and a cheap loose dress.  I put it out for my DH and doula so that they would know what to put me in when we left for the hospital.  I would not wear anything nice because there are lots of fluids and juices coming  out when you are in labor.  Once we got to the hospital and I was admitted I just work my nursing bra.  I didn't bother with the hospital gown since I was so focused on my contractions and pushing!!
  • I posted this same question on my September Board a few days ago and here is a link to a skirt one of the ladies recommened.  She used it for her first birth and planned to use it again and it sounds like it's a snap skirt - easy to remove and put back on and was not intrusive for the Drs/nurses.

  • We're going to be at home, so hospital gown is not an option.  I really like the look of this gown from Target.  I am most comfortable in spaghetti straps and I like the loose flowiness of the bottom.  And it's black.  I can have a little modesty on top and access down below, which is what will most likely make me most comfortable, unless I just want to take it all off.  It's also great for nursing.

Considering I did my last 2 cm and pushing naked last time, maybe this might be a good option to entice me to be a little more modest this time around.
