Where will your baby sleep when it first gets home?

I have been looking at posts in the 3rd Trimester room and people are talking about having their babies in their bedroom when they first come home.  Is this a new thing that I haven't heard of yet?  Are you doing this?  Why?

Re: Where will your baby sleep when it first gets home?

  • In her crib, in her room, which is down the hall from us.

Yep, I'm a cold and heartless parent. DS lasted in our room for a week, no one was getting any sleep and I decided bassinets are a bunch of bull.

  • We did this with DD1 and plan on with #2 also.  For me personally, it's easier to "roll" out of bed and get the baby from the pac n play and either sit down in the rocker or bed right there.....you know, instead of walking the whole 15 feet to her room:)  And I am a paranoid mama and I like to look at them breathing and listen to their noises.

  • Yes for a couple reasons. I have a pnp with bassinet and a rnp in our room ready for him. 1) for ease of breastfeeding and not having to trudge upstairs to his nursery eveytime he needs something 2) Ive read the benefits of co-sleeping and having them near you and it fits well with my personality as how I'd like to be as a mother.

  • We plan on putting him in his own crib in his own room too...I was just curious what was all the talk about having the baby in the parents bedroom.  I had never seen it before so I was just wondering.  lol

  • RnP or bassinet in our room. Probably. Each of my kids has slept differently so who knows what this baby will do. With DD1 we bedshared for a long time. DD2 slept in a crib in our room for a few months before switching to her room. We'll play it by ear!

  • LO will be sleeping in a bassinet in our room when he comes home until he is sleeping through the night, or at least not waking up multiple times a night. It is easier when you're tired in the night. It has also been said that there is less of a change of the baby developing SIDS when they sleep in the same room as their parents.

It is really common for the baby to sleep in the parents room in the beginning. People use PNP, bassinets, co-sleepers, RNP.... DS1 slept in our room for the first 4 weeks before we moved him to his room. We plan to do the same for this guy. I'm more concerned with the new baby waking up DS1 so that will weigh a lot on our decision on when to move him to his own room. It is nice to have the newborn right there when you are feeding every 2 hours. DS was doing a 4 hour stretch of sleep by the time he was 4 weeks so it made it easier to transition him.

  • Baby will be in PNP bassinet at first in our bedroom. I know my paranoid self and I know I will need LO to be close to me for the first little while.

  • We have a co-sleeper (like a small pack n play that goes right up to the bed).

I plan on keeping the baby there since I hope to breastfeed.  I figure it will be easier on me, and for some reason the risk of SIDS goes down when the baby is in the same room.

I have the nursury crib ready too, and figure baby can sleep there once I return to work.  Me and baby may move into the guest bedroom for a while if DH cannot sleep.  He has a very physical job that I want him to be well rested for (could be life threatening if he made a mistake at work).  Since I'll be off work, I'll take the brunt of sleepless nights.

Never seen it before? Lol hate to be the bearer of bad news but most babies do not enjoy being far away from the mother they just spent 9 mths inside of. Some do but a lot don't.

  • Bassinet in our room, mostly for ease of nighttime feedings as PPs mentioned.
  • RNP beside our bed, or a PNP if she doesn't like the RNP.

We kept DS in our room for ~3 months and DD in our room for ~4.  I just prefer to have them nearby for ease of night feedings.  And just because I enjoy having them in our room at first!

  • I hope in her room, but I have PNP with bassinet for in my room if that totally doesn't work out.  My friend told me I absolutely cannot put her straight in her crib..... as she was feeding her DD about 1000 calories in cupcakes.  So, there's that.  I'm sure she knows what she's talking about.

  • Well...with DD I planned on having her sleep in her crib in her room, but that didn't happen! She ended up in the rock-n-play / bassinet right next to our bed. We tried the bassinet first, but she would NOT sleep on her back. She would only sleep for a few minutes at a time in the bassinet, so I ended up holding her while we slept. This made me nervous, though, because I thought I was going to squish her. So then we heard about the RNP, and we tried it! AMAZING! She slept for 6 hours in a row the first night we had it. Because the RNP is angled, she felt much more comfortable and was able to sleep. She wasn't able to sleep on her back until 3.5 months old, which is when we put her in her crib in her room. We could have just put the RNP in her room, but I was breastfeeding and it actually was easier to keep her right next to our bed.

Baby will be in the crib from day one.  The master closet and nursery closet are connected, so when both doors are open, I will literally be less than 20 ft away from the crib.

  • He'll be in a co-sleeper next to our bed. I'm doing it for the convenience. I plan to nurse and it's just easier for me to have him right there. On top of that, I'm a FTM and I'll probably be a little paranoid about how he's doing, so it'll be nice to have him close by. DH sleeps like a rock so I'm not worried about him being sleep deprived while he's at work or anything.

  • We are going to use a bassinet in our room for the first little while.  Not sure how long but the sooner he is out of our room the better.  I am guessing around 6weeks.

As a FTP's we plan on having LO in the room with us in a bassinet, but if it disturbs DH too much during the night I will put the bassinet in the nursery (across the hall, maybe 10ft) use the monitor and nurse/feed in the nursery or living room. I forsee a lot of nights spent on the couch and baby in the PNP bassinet.

I'm putting mine in a baby cage.

LOL. I should add, OP, that while a lot of people like the baby close for nighttime feedings, DS never nursed well if I was lying down, so if I had to sit up anyway, I might as well have been in his room, in the glider.

In our room, either in our bed or the co-sleeper.  Keeping DD in our room was so easy with nursing, especially since she nursed all night long until I night weaned her at a year.  Plus I liked the snuggles.
  • Baby will be in our room, in a bassinet.  With my boys, until they stop waking through the night for feedings, I kept them in our room, either co-sleeping or in the pack n play.  I am a big fan of nursing while lying down, so hopefully this LO is too!!  It was the only way we all got sleep in our house!

    Crib, in her room.

this. Its right across our room.

  • In a bassinet next to the bed, at least for a few nights. We don't really have a plan for how long she'll stay there before going to her crib. We'll play it by ear.

  • We plan on having her in our room until she's STTN. This is for a couple reasons, we live in a 3 bedroom house so the other rooms are occupied by DS and DD and since I plan on BF'ing, I figure it will be easier to have her close and she only wakes up DH and I and then when she's STTN, she'll move in with her big sister.

  • DS slept in a PNP in our room for the first 6 months.  DS2 will sleep in our room as well.  I kept him in our room for a few reasons.  1. His room is upstairs and on the opposite side of the house from our downstairs bedroom.  2. I was a bit of a freak about SIDS I wanted to make sure he was breathing. 3.feeding at night was so much easier and I didn't have to worry about going up and down the stairs in the middle of the night.  There were other reasons but those were my major reasons for rooming in.  :)

  • In a PNP in our room. DS slept in our room until I went back to work at 10 weeks.

It's just so much easier to nurse in the middle of the night, and in the very beginning I could not imagine having him out of my sight.

Also, ditto others that babies who sleep near their parents supposedly have a lower SIDs risk.

  • In her own room in her crib.

We're keeping our PnP downstairs so I'm not going to bring a 3rd sleeping aparatus into our bedroom, stock it with diapers and diaper changing supplies, etc. when I can walk the 20 feet into her room to feed/change her in the middle of the night.

  • I just bought a RNP (should be here today!), because I heard they are a lifesaver.  Baby will likely sleep in it next to our bed for a little while at least.  I figure the less time I spend commuting to and from the nursery, (a whopping 15 feet down the hall...), the quicker we can hopefully take care of the feeding and diaper changing business and get back to sleep.  But seriously, what do I know?  I'm a FTM.  We'll see how long it lasts in reality. ;-)

  • Baby will be in our room in a pack and play for a few reasons:

    1. it's easier because I'll be nursing her every few hours and this way I don't have to get out of bed

    2. her crying would likely wake DD if she was sleeping in her crib (they will be sharing a room)

    3. National SIDS foundation recommends baby spending 6 months in its parents' room to reduce the risk of SIDS

  • In a bassinet in our room or in our room in the RnP, depending on what she prefers at first.

  • Either in a PnP or RnP in our room for the first few weeks at night, her crib for naps.  Once her movements are loud enough to wake us up (not cries, of course--but DD1 was a loud sleeper after a few months and it drove me nuts), she'll be in her own crib.

  • In our room in  a PnP. It's so much easier in the beginning. We'll transition her into her crib once she starts STTN.

  • RnP down stairs with me in guest room. I'm not planning on doing stairs for a week at least.
  • My plan is to try to do the RnP in our room the first month, then once I'm able to start pumping and getting her used to a bottle, DH can help with night feedings and she can go in her nursery.  Really, though, we're just going to play this one by ear and see what works for us.

  • We will probably have him in our room in a pack n play like we did with dd. I am going to try to get him in his crib after a few weeks. My dd slept in our room for the 1st 6 months.

Omg.... I hope I have the willpower to do this. People tell me I will cave and put the baby with us. I would love her in her own room..
  • She will be sleeping in a bassinet in our room for the first little bit.  I am so lazy for this breast feeding.
