Are you going to use baby lotion?

My MIL was trying to tell me this weekend that I shouldn't use any baby lotions because they cause eczema and dries the babies skin out. She said that the only thing I should be putting on the baby is Vaseline. The thought of just rubbing down a baby in Vaseline kind of just grosses me out. Any thoughts on this?

  • OU plan to use earth mama angel baby lotion and coconut oil.

  • I've never regularly used lotion on my babies. I have a tube of aveeno that I keep around for dry spots, but that's pretty much all the lotion they've ever needed. I have not heard of lotion being linked to eczema. That sounds like a OWT. I would not be putting vaseline all over baby.

  • I wouldnt use vaseline because it has petroleum in it. I plan on using lotion to prevent dry skin.  I never heard anything about it causing dry skin.  Ive also heard oils work great too!
  • I just don't get the point. Do they NEED lotion? I'll probably just use CeraVe or something if I truly need to, but if he doesn't seem like he needs some moisturizer, I don't think it's necessary.

We didn't really use lotion much with DS. I do have some Burt's Bees that we'll use, but honestly I had a hard time remembering. And DS turned out ok. I mean, he doesn't look like an alligator or anything.

When I read this I started to laugh and baby decided to kick me in the bladder...seriously almost just peed my pants!

  • At the baby classes we took, we were told that Vasaline isn't a good option either--we were told to use olive/coconut oil for awhile because it's more natural and easier to absorb.

I have Aveeno and California baby lotion that I plan on using.

Yeah, I think I'm going to see what LOs skin is like and only use as needed.

We switched to Dove for DS (16 months) and will be using it for this baby as well.  It does dry out skin, once we switched to Dove soap & lotion his dry skin cleared right up.

This is what I plan to do!

The Vaseline thing just sounds crazy to me! When she said that I just cringed and imagined me putting it all over myself...disgusting!

  • I think using Vaseline would be a good way to make your baby overheat...that stuff doesn't really allow for sweating or for heat to escape the body. Which is why you shouldn't put it on burns...

I think the lotion is more for the massage that the baby would enjoy...I'm not sure that the baby really "needs" it, but if he does, I will probably use something that's not known to irritate the skin further.

  • I used lotion with all of my babies. I noticed that my babies skin looked very nice, not broken out or dry when I DID use lotion, and it also helped tremendously when our babies got cradle cap.  Once I noticed the cradle cap start I used lotion on it and within a few days it went away.  I also like to use baby oil on their skin too.  We would lotion them up after a bath each night as part of their routine, I felt like it helped them sleep, too.  We would use the night time relaxing baby lotion.  I guess babies do not need to have lotion/oil, but it actually worked out well for our kiddos.

  • I use Aveeno lotion for DS after his bathes. He also had some dry skin issues and I started using a Dove bar in his bath. It cleared the issues right up. I told a co-worker about it (whose son had eczema) and that too cleared up with the Dove bar. I puffy heart Dove!

  • We received giant bottles of J&J stuff at our shower, which I am just going to store under the sink. I got some Burt's Bees lotion that smells yummy. I won't use it on her daily, but like a pp said, for calming massage or every once in a while. I mainly plan on using coconut oil if she needs some sort of moisturizer.

  • My mom is all about lotion of some sort.  I think both my brother and I had cradle cap when we were little.  I'm going to try to avoid that for sure, it's gross.

Doubtful that I'll use moisturizer on a regular basis, I can't even remember to do it to myself when my hands hurt from being so dry!

  • i use body shop burti butter on DD1. She gets crazy eczema and has since birth. The reason you might want to go with a cream vs a lotion is that lotions contain a higher alcohol content. But vaseline? not on a newborn....

  • I'll be using lotion.  I look forward to giving my LO little baby massages.  I figure it's good sensory stimulation and good for circulation too.

  • I used it as needed for DS, and his skin didn't dry out. Vaseline seems kind of gross to me.

  • We didn't use any lotion at all on DS except for when he had excema flareups. When we did use alcohol it was for sensitive skin, excema-friendly and alcohol-free. Now we rub him down after each bath because if we don't his skin freaks out, but when he was a baby it wasn't like that.

    Vasaline?? EW!
