Cloth Diapering

Best CD-safe barrier cream?

DS has had a persistent contact rash for the last week from acidic pee/poop. It just won't go away! We had been using CA Baby but he started to scream in pain when I put that on, so I switched to Angel Baby Bottom Balm with a coat of coconut oil on top. Also I sponge him off with a baking soda solution to neutralize his skin and make sure he is completely dry before applying balm and re-diapering. And he's been getting several hours of naked time a day.

So we just came from the Dr. and they confirmed that it's not infected and it's not yeast, we should just keep doing what we're doing but use a better barrier. We need something that is more effective than the coconut oil to get this rash under control.

Dr. suggested Un-Petroleum or Boudreax Butt Paste but I'm not sure if either are CD Safe. Anyone have experience with either of these?

I'm not opposed to using sposies for a few days to get this under control, but would love to know if there are better alternatives!

Re: Best CD-safe barrier cream?

  • No experience with either of those but DD had some redness on Monday and I started slathering her with CJ's BUTTer and using sposies (I think either my detergent or wipes solution caused the redness) and it was cleared up within 2 days.

  • I've never heard of Un-Petroleum, but Boudreax is not CD-safe.

Honestly, I'd just continue the naked time and put him in sposies for a day or two and use the heavy duty cream to heal the rash.

  • Boudreaux's is not CD safe. It will stain.

Not sure about Un-petroleum, but honestly I don't think it will be that much different in its performance than what you are already using. I have some (not for CD use) and it's kind of runny.

Maybe try Grandma El's. It is thicker than coconut oil or Angel Baby. I actually have all three of these in my rash cream arsenal.

  • The only two CD-friendly creams that have worked to heal the same sort of rash you are describing (happens to DD everytime she teeths) is Grandma El's and GroVia Magic Stick.

If it gets really bad I usually do overnight with a sposie with her bottom covered in Sudocrem (zinc oxide based cream) and then a few changes during the day with a sposie and the same cream. It helps to get the healing started and then I switch back to CD's, fitteds in particular if she has a rash.

    Good luck!

  • I've never had any luck getting rid of rash with the CD safe creams.  I have used CJ's and Grovia Magic Stick and although both are pretty good and preventing rashes and redness, once my DD's hiney is red we always need something stronger.  I actually like Triple Paste better than the Butt Paste.  I would use one of those with sposies until the rash gets better.

  • My little girl has a bad diaper rash from I think the tea tree oil I used in her wipes solution.  Or maybe the Charlie's detergent.  Not sure which but being in sposies with CJ's seems to be clearing it up. I tried desitin but she screamed when I put that on and it didn't seem to do anything for her rash at all compared to the CJ's and sposie use.  I noticed that the Earth Mama Angel Baby butt cream also has TTO so ditching that for now.  However, I just read the ingredients on the cucumber melon CJ's and there's lanolin in it!  I thought CJ's was CD friendly but isn't lanolin a no-no for cloth diapers other than woolies?  Or is that an okay ingredient?

At any rate, trying a new detergent and just going to use water for her wipes.  I decided to strip her diapers and wipes before washing in the new detergent just to be safe

  • I love Northern Essence Balm and the Better Bum Cream. Or whatever. Both are great.

I'd do a ton of naked time to help clear it up. If he's crying in pain when getting changed, it needs to get fixed ASAP.

You could always get some fleece, chop it up into liners, and use the pastes the doctor prescribed. Just wash separately from the rest of your diapers and you should be okay.

  • Thank you ladies!

I decided to just use sposies with the heavy duty cream for the next couple of days ... the rash is far enough down his thighs that I'm not sure a liner would adequately protect the cloth diapers.

He's starting to look better already, and I'm going to try adding some of the products you mentioned to our toolbox.
