Talk to me about sleep cues and naps

Hi ladies,

My DS is 4 weeks old. I am trying to figure out what we are doing in terms of napping.  The first couple of weeks he was barely awake at all and mostly ate and slept. Now that he is more alert, I am excited to interact with him more and we are playing on his mat, looking in the mirror, doing tummy time, etc. I try to pick up on his sleep cues and put him down for a nap when I see him yawning, but the past few days he has been fighting it, crying and taking a while for me to calm him down and get him to fall asleep.  I feel like I am missing something and he is getting overtired and cranky.

How do you tell when LO is ready for a nap? How long do/did you keep LO awake a 4 weeks old?

Re: Talk to me about sleep cues and naps

  • Sounds like you are doing it right to me. My son fights sleep like it's his job. He is just too interested in what is going on around him. He has one position though that I can hold him and he falls asleep almost instantly. You just have to find your babies favorite spot!

He may be getting overtired. Try taking note of how long it takes to get that first yawn and cut back on that awake time. Sometimes by the time they show those sleepy cues, they are already sleepy. I think my girls were only awake about 45 minutes at a time at that age, including the time it took to eat. It seemed too short but if they stayed up much past that time, they got overtired and fussy and wound up crying more.

I try to sleep my baby within 1-2 hours of him being awake. This morning he was only awake for an hour before he started looking sleepy (glassy eyes, limp limps, yawning) so I breastfed him and put him down without any crying.
