How Hard Would it be....

to change a bedtime routine? DD is a little over 4mos.

Currently our routine is:  Bath (if needed), PJs, story, nurse, bed.  What I'm not too fond of is that 99% of the time she nurses to sleep. I prefer her to go to bed more awake so that when/if she wakes overnight, she'll be able to put herself to sleep-because right now that isn't happening.

So I'm thinking of doing: bath, PJs nurse, story, bed.  I just am not sure how to wake her after nursing-she might wake up once I start talking to her, etc. And I have a feeling that putting her down awake is going to be very difficult and she'll do a lot of crying. Thoughts or suggestions??

  • It will be hard because you aren't so much changing a bedtime routine but you are wanting to sleep train. It's something that you have to commit to and decide before you start what methods are the best for you and your family. If you decide to CIO, you have to stick with it every time in the same way so she will get used to the consistancy and she will learn what to expect and eventually how to soothe herself.

It is hard, but so worth it (IMO)

  • I would try Good Night Sleep tight.  It's the Sleep lady method.  It allows them to cry but you are there with them.  A is too little to CIO.  I'm pretty sure sleep training isn't recommended until 6 months.  My sister had a lot of success with the sleep lady method and she started it really early i want to say 6 weeks.

I would do nurse, bath, pjs, story bed.

I think 4 months is too young for CIO in the middle of the night...but not for putting down to sleep and teaching them to soothe. If you wait until 6 months...you are chancing trying to train during a milestone. With DS, he was used to putting himself to sleep - so if he woke up in the middle of the night we knew he was hungry (or sick/teething)...a 4 month old at a healthy weight does not need a feeding in the middle of the night...it's usually for comfort at that point. But sometimes they just don't eat enough during the day for whatever reason.

We don't give that last feeding too soon (like before a bath) because the earlier we feed him the earlier he wakes up. And I like to sleep in until at least 8 : )

  • I would recommend Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Baby. It gives tips on how to sleep train and works wonders for us! The book says that 4 months is approx the time to start full out sleep training. Good luck!
