Babies: 6 - 9 Months

What to do with 5 month old all day?

I am a SAHM and LO is 5 months monday. We are both going nuts! I cant get anything done and I think he is bored. We have an exersaucer that buys me maybe 20 min. We just introduced it this week. Bouncy seat is only cool for naps and our 4 moms swing- fugehtaboutit. Help!!!!

  • My LO spends a lot of time on his playmat or a blanket on the floor with lots of toys, on his tummy, on his back or sitting up(you LO probably isn't sitting yet?) but it's good for them to just spend time reaching for and exploring toys. He loves it!

  • What about playgroups with other moms?  Our LO is in daycare and she LOVES the interactions with the other babies, esp. the older ones.  Even taking LO to the park to watch the other kiddos might be entertaining.

Our LO loves Baby Einstein videos - esp ones that have puppets, she squeals with delight!  She loves being read to, loves having a stuffed animal "talk" to her, and loves sitting in her high chair banging various toys around.

  • Correct- not sitting up yet. We do a storytime group on tuesdays and a bf group on mondays. He loves checking out other babies. Been WAY to hot here to even go to park. 90s plus for two months lol. We do mall trips just to get oyt too...
  • Prior to it being hot we: took stroller walks, went to the park, go swimming, swinging on the swingset

Now, we are also going crazy inside, but I read to her, run lots of errands to take up time, Target runs, turn on some music (we have Sirius through DishNetwork) and sing to her, lots of pattycake, itsy bitsy spider, Wheels on the Bus, tours throughout the house, and she is pretty good about entertaining herself and playing with her toys. It helps that she's crawling and standing and whatnot, but I would just keep switching it up. I need to get some educational videos for her, but she absolutely LOVES Jeopardy (it must be the colors). :-) Maybe the information is somehow seeping in and she'll remember random trivia, haha.

Hang in there! I can't wait until fall when she can play in the leaves and stuff! We'll be making lots of trips to the apple orchard too. Oh, another idea: we like to go to the nursery and look at flowers and plants. That's also hard when it's hot out too though. :-(

  • In addition to what's been mentioned already, we take trips to the library. She gets to watch the other kids play and we read a few books, plus it's air-conditioned!

Yes! We also go to the library 2-3 times a week in addition to the Friday morning storytime we attend.

  • Yeah I remember 5 months being tough to get anything done.  I had to either wear her in a wrap or do tasks that could be interrupted.  As long as she could see me, we were good, but I couldn't leave the room without her crying.  The nice thing about this age was that she could still easily fall asleep in the stroller or car seat if we went out to the mall or to Target.  Now at 8 months, she's too interested in what's going on and will not nap when we're out and about.

  • Before LO was mobile, I dragged her around the house with me.
If I was folding laundry, then I fold it beside her and play peek -a-boo as we go.

If I'm cooking dinner, I pop her on her play mat with some kitchen stuff like wooden spoons, and whisks a couple of feet away from me. and talk about what I'm doing.

I find if she can see me she's mostly content, and she likes seeing the rest of the house.
