Do I need Rhogam shot now? (bloody discharge)

I had bloody mucas discharge yesterday and was sent to the hospital for monitoring. Everything turned out fine but I forgot to ask if I needed to get a Rhogam shot because there was blood. I tried calling my doctor's office but of course they are closed and I called the hospital and they won't answer my question and refer me back to my doctor, which will charge me if I call the on-call service. Does anyone know the answer to this? I will call the on call doctor if I have to but thought I would ask here first.

  • Sorry no answer, but I think it is ridiculous that they charge for the on-call to answer a question.

I know, this is the first time that I was told I would be charged for using the on-call service. Their office is closed because they are having a company picnic and then they charge people that have medical issues, go figure! Well anyway, I did call, and spoke with my favorite doctor who said that I do need the shot, and now I must head back to the hospital for the shot, which could've been given to me last night. Ahhhh!

  • Will the shot help at this point? I just found at that I am RH Negative and will be getting the shot at 28 weeks but if the discharge is from the antibodies being built up and going after the RH Positive blood of the baby, it was my understanding that the shot is useless and you'll need to be monitored and get the blood transfusion. I could be way off since this is all new to me but from everything I read, I thought that was the process. Hope all works out for you! Good luck and my thoughts are with you.

  • I think the hospital would have told you if you needed it now. Especially if this is your first, you don't really "need" it now (not until your second child/pregnancy). It has to do with your blood mixing with baby's blood which happpens at the placenta, so if you need it, you'll get it and a bloody discharge really has no affect on the need for it or not. And you only need it if your blood type is negative anyway.
  • Yep, the last poster was right.  It really protects against future pregnancies.  Plus, in my experience, drs and hospital are overzealous about giving the shot, so I'm fairly certain they would have given it to you if you needed it.

After my first missed m/c I called asking about this shot. I was told as long as it is given within 72 hrs it will work.

Thanks for the responses, yes I am rh negative, or this wouldnt even be an issue. And this is my third pregnancy and you do have 72 hours to get the shot. Since my doctor says I need it, I all be going back for it, and since I would be getting it in 5 weeks anyway, there is no harm in getting it earlier, for piece of mind. This is a good reminder to be an advocate for yourself since the hospital staff never even brought this up and my doctor feels pretty strongly that I need it, overzealous as it my be, better safe than sorry.

  • My dr told me that if I have sporting or any type of blood I would need the rhogam shot. I would call the dr. 'cause they'll prob tell you to go back to the ER. Plus, they might not actually charge you, minE doesn't charge preg patients.
