  • Since this is apparently a food UO: I hate mayo; it makes me gag. If I order a sandwich and it has mayo on it I won't eat it. I don't know why premade sandwiches have to have mayo on them, just put a little packet in there. It's nasty, slimy and terrible for you.

If you just decide to start a family, why are you concerned with tracking and testing ?DPO...when my husband and I started to try to have a baby, we stopped pulling out and waited to see what would happen, we were fortunate to get pg the first month, but I don't remember what day it was..we just did what felt right.

I have an obsessive personality, so I wanted to learn everything when we started TTC.  I also thought everything about how the body works was so interesting.  Another reason for us was that I'm a teacher, so I was hoping for good timing.  April worked pretty well :)

It's not that bad for you!

Geez, I thought the notion that all fat is bad fat went out with the 1980s.

I'm not sure if it's a UO for most people, but it sure is for the people I'm around.

I would flip out on someone if they did that around me.

i wish i could be joking but my dad is the music teacher at a church so he owuld be mad. we had sex, all the time how bad i know but we dont want to wait and he said GREAT OH KAY! and I was really feeling the wets? down there- too embarsed to say- but he acted like man.
  • I'll join in on this one... Mayo is gross, but I love 1,000 Island dressing...

Mustard is the most disgusting condiment in the American Standard Condiment list. (mayo, mustard, ketchup, relish and salsa.) (And yes, I just made that list up)

I don't think you should be offered a formula bag in the hospital EVER, but if you ask for it you should get it with no question.  You should also see a lactation consultant in the hospital weather you plan on BFing or not.

Ice cream cones pi$$ me off because I can't eat it with out making a mess.

I've been begging DH to go to brunch... It's not quite breakfast, it's not quite lunch, but it comes with a slice of cantaloupe on the side...

And anyone who knows where that last quote is from is totally awesome.

I know there are good fats, but I also know people that put a giant glob of emulsified oil and egg on top of everything and I can't see how that can be good for you.  Also, it's generally made with vegetable oil and I'm not a huge fan of soy products. I only use canola and olive in my kitchen.

  • Breakfast rules my world. I live for breakfast. I can't wait for Saturday mornings when my LO is older and we have another and can make bear pancakes.

I hate sushi. And wasabi. And my husband is Japanese so I feel like a bad wife. BUT! I did make it homemade for him on his birthday once so I feel like that got me off the hook, for like, ever.

I'm disliking alcohol these days. A few sips gets me a headache for the whole next day, even with being really hydrated. Goodbye my white and red wine, Mexican beers with lots of lime and bloody mary's. I know the first time I just go for it will be the worst hangover ever. And I've had some doozies, coining the phrase, "death over."

And finally, I hate breastfeeding. I have to wear shields due to my flat nipples that I didn't know were flat. I'm only continuing to do it because it's great for LO and convenient. And I feel like DH will be disappointed if we have to use bottles or formula.

I was just referring to Food Network personalities...if we open it up to any celebrity chef, then it's a whole different ballgame!

When I was in the hospital, I felt very pressured to supplement...they kept asking me non-stop, at least 2X a day, and said "It's not bad for the baby," or "He needs to eat."  They tried to get me to use this tube that would feed him formula, but he'd still be latched...I felt a lot of pressure to give him formula, like what I was doing wasn't enough for him.  I did give him a very small amount to supplement when we got home (like I said above, it helped a lot to have those samples to get him to latch), but I do feel that if I wasn't persistent in telling them no, they would have completely pressured me into FF from the get-go.  I'm not saying that it's a bad thing for those who do, but I personally felt a lot of pressure.  I didn't know what I was doing, and I only met with the LC once, so it was a very confusing time.

    Indifferent

    Wow.

Maybe you need a new pedi. I know for me personally, our pedi knows much more about kids, diseases, etc than I do since he is a DOCTOR and I am not. He is also a father of 3 and I do trust him because he has my children's lives in his hands. He has also said on more than one occasion that this is his professional opinion and this is his opinion as a father. He is pro-BF which is great for our family. He doesn't care when we start solids as we like to delay solids until at least 6 months and do a modified BLW, he just wants table foods by 12 months which is what we do. He is not a CIO pedi and he actually listens to our concerns and makes us feel better since that is what a large percentage of their job is, to allievate fears and concerns in parents.

Now, that being said, I'm totally understanding of those of you that have had to try hared for your miracles! It's great that there are tools and tracks that are less invasive that can help people conceive and I hope it does not appear that brushing that aside. I'm simply referring to those of us who JUST started trying and got pregnant.

ETA: I thought of this because I have meandered over to the April 2013 board a couple times and it remnded me of what our board looked like in the beginning too.

Congrats! You are fertile!  Some of us aren't so lucky and have spent many years, tears and a ton of money to get pregnant.

I charted to avoid and that is how I found out I had PCOS 8 years ago and even at that it took 6 months for a doctor to listen to my concerns since we were not TTC. I read TCOYF right around the time we got married 2/04 and I charted and realized my cycles were all wonky. I started seeing various docs in 4/04 and finally got my dx after several tests in 8/04. Everytime we were ready to TTC I charted. We tried for 3 1/2 years before getting serious July of 2008. I absolutely charted to help increase my chances of getting pregnant. There is nothing wrong with being informed of how your body works.  Even with clomid I couldn't just have sex on day 14 as I always O'd on day 18 or 19 with clomid, except my BFP cycle which was day 16. If I wasn't charting I would've missed out on all those opportunities especially the one that resulted in my son as that was 2-3 days before my "normal" with clomid. Since DD was an "oh look at that", I must have O'd around day 14 since I only had sex that day. I was not paying attention to my cycle and if I were I would've known not to have sex that day. DH and I even discussed beforehand that the odds were not in our favor to get pregnant so we thought we were safe (again, I never realized it was day 14, only later that week did I realize it after I had a pregnancy dream and woke up panicked since we were one and done). Obviously in our case the odds were 100%.

I don't have a problem if people want to chart from the start. It only makes sense to me but then again I charted back when I was 23 and children weren't even on the radar. At that point I didn't think I ever wanted kids, but the moment the doctor said that DH and I had less than a 5% chance of having a biological child without major medical intervention boy oh boy did I feel robbed at that very moment.  I'm so glad that both children proved that doctor wrong and even that doctor told me how he was happy to have been proven wrong after DS was born.

While I don't completely disagree with you, if you feel this way you should find someone else.  My DS's first pedi drove me insane and I hated going to see him.  I found him a new one at 5 months and I love her to pieces and trust her.  However, I have experience with many many doctors from going through cancer, which showed me that there are so many doctors with different experiences and different opinions out there.  This makes it is so so so important that you always be an informed patient and be your own (or your child's) advocate.  What I mean by that is, without being a hypochondriac, push for answers if something a doctor says or decides upon makes you uncomfortable and always change to another doctor if you don't trust or like your care.

While these people do go through a lot school and training, there are people out there who can easily pass tests but have a very hard time applying what they know to actual patients.  As long as you remain informed, then you should be okay.

It did take me a while to get PG and I have PCOS so that's another issue, but all of those things aside I don't see what is wrong with giving it your absolute best shot. If you really want to get pregnant, why not do everything in your power to make it happen as quickly as possible?

I read and took mrsburt's UO as saying that she didn't understand why people who are just starting out TTC would be so detailed (in their sig's). Not that she didn't understand charting before or at the beginning of TTC.

I had PCOS and started charting after we didn't get preg the first few months, and wasn't diagnosed with PCOS until I talked to my OB at my annual over a year into trying. Clomid got us our boys, and I hope we don't have to go that route again but do realize that we may need to.

My food UOs is that I hate mustard. The smell of it makes me gag. BUT I will eat it if it's in deviled eggs. I have never tried mayo mixed with ketchup, but I do like each individually. I don't like or understand mayo on a hamburger, at all.

See, this is the way I feel about ketchup.  Wendy's Junior Bacon Cheeseburger does not come with ketchup so I never had to worry until it happened one day.  I bit into my lovely Junior Bacon Cheeseburger and one second later, hurled it out of my mouth and onto my dashboard.  I nearly threw up and died.  The woman at the counter actually tried to argue with me and tell me they had ketchup on them.  NO MA'AM, you are incorrect!  I got three free burgers that day but it still was not worth the reminder of how vile ketchup is.

I don't think you should be offered a formula bag in the hospital EVER, but if you ask for it you should get it with no question.  You should also see a lactation consultant in the hospital weather you plan on BFing or not.

I probably would not have asked for the formula bag because I planned to EBF for at least the first six weeks, until I went back to work. However, on day 5, when I absolutely could not see trying to latch DD onto my bleeding nipples one more time, I was glad I had it. I gave her one bottle of premixed formula and then went out and bought a pump. I pretty much EPed for the next 6 weeks, with a couple of nursing sessions thrown in.  I did not mind bottle feeding expressed breast milk. In fact, it has made some things easier. H was able to give her a bottle, enabling me to get more sleep and be more flexible with my schedule; I haven't tried to intro a bottle later in the game.

I FF now, but getting those samples was not what made me do so. I AM a little weirded out by the marketing aspect, but I think if you are committed to trying to breastfeed, you aren't going to be swayed by formula samples. And that formula sample sure came in handy even though I couldn't have known it would. But, I reiterate, it was not what made me choose to FF several weeks later. It just provided a meal.

I don't see the point in seeing a LC if you don't even want to attempt to breastfeed.

Some hospitals have stopped offering the formula samples so they can be certified as "baby friendly."

Finally, I don't give a sh!t how other women choose to feed their baby, and I wish bf-ing advocates would butt thefucck out.

eta: also, in my hospital, NOBODY pushed the formula on me. They quietly distributed the samples, and that was that.

  • I just googled the UNICEF baby-friendly certification guidelines. I don't plan to bf next time (if there is a next time), and if the hospital here stops allowing supplementation unless medically indicated so they can get some certification, I SWEAR TO GOD. FF is NOT child abuse. I shouldn't have to give a doctor's note stating that BFing is bad for my emotional wellbeing ensure that my child gets fed.

There has to be a way for hospitals to be both "breastfeeding friendly" AND supportive of those who FF.  The initiative isn't planning on eliminating FF efforts completely, are they?  I feel like I need to research this more...

  • Okay, I'm drinking, so forgive me, but honestly bringing in a LC for someone who doesn't want to BF seems kind of like forcing women who want to get an abortion to have an ultrasound. Obviously, FF is not THE SAME as abortion, and I would be offended if someone suggested it was, but BF IS using your body to sustain the life of another, and in that sense, it is a very personal decision and one that I don't think other people should meddle in or try to guilt or shame a person into making.

    Oh yeah, another UO:

I *hate* Paula Deen.  I could totally see that she's a raving beotch once the camera turns off.

Anthony Bourdain> Almost all food network chefs

Incorrect.  The correct answer is, Alton Brown.

Alton Brown is pretty cool.  I should elaborate:

Anthony Bourdain> Rachel Ray, Paula Deen, that Semi-Homemade chick, that guy that eats massive amounts of food and looks sickly (Man vs Food I think?), Bobby Flay.

Cool food network: Ina Garden, Alton Brown, Mario Batalli

I liked Anthony Bourdain until I read Kitchen Confidential... Now I think he's mediocre and an a$$. Alton Brown is 10,000x better.

I've never read it, maybe I'll look into it.  Is it his book or a book written about him?

I just googled the UNICEF baby-friendly certification guidelines.

My hospital was certified baby friendly and at the time I thought this was great, and although I EBF I still think whoever wants to use formula should absolutely be able to! It is insane if a hospital tries to force breast feeding on anyone. Insane!

My UO: I don't get why people like to drink alcohol. It tastes horrible, can make you feel horrible. Granted I come from a line of many alcoholics so I tend to stay away from it anyway. I just turned 31, I've probably drank less than 20 times in 10 years...drunk 3 I think. Cant tell you the last time I even had a drink, it's probably been close to 2 years.

Haha! Not a UO, just means more booze for the rest of us!

It tastes great, and it can make you feel great! Big Smile

Cheers to that! Drinks In fact, I'm throughly enjoying my glass of Malbec right now!

But seriously, OP, I admire the fact that you stay away from it since alcoholism runs in your family.

  • I think after a certain age (late 50's) everyone should have to road test for their driver?s license each year. I am sick of getting stuck behind old people who are going 20 under the speed limit or old ladies who merge in to my lane without looking or almost hit people in parking lots.

His.  He writes about the culinary world and it's kind of autobiographical, talking about the kitchens he worked in.  Several restuaants of his shut down and the blame is always with someone else.

You guys have it all wrong. Gordon Ramsay is by far the coolest celebrity chef.

How could I forget about Gordon?

    DONKEY!

I have a total crush on Joe Bastianich from Masterchef.

I was just referring to Food Network personalities...if we open it up to any celebrity chef, then it's a whole different ballgame!

Unless Ramsey is/was a Food Network chef?? I don't remember if he had a show on there or not...

Nope. He and his Michelin stars are too cool for the food network.

Another food UO- in my neck of the woods there is NO mustard on hamburgers! When I go to McDonalds out of state and there is mustard on my burger I get very angry!

ETA- I can actually remember going to an out of state mcdonalds as a child and then hysterically crying like a brat when my cheeseburger had mustard on it. On that same day I ordered a coke and got a dr pepper. Oh the horror!

I LOVE Dr. Pepper! And I always order my cheeseburgers plain to avoid getting condiments I don't want.

    I like Dr. Pepper, and....
