I don't eat at CFA because it irritates the crap out of me that those cows can't spell properly. Their stance on marriage and gay rights is just the icing on the cake for me.
Even though I hate all sex offenders, I don't agree with this statement in general. Unfortunately for victims, there are ALWAYS going to be people who make false accusations, whether they be the victims themselves or parents of children. That is why an investigation is necessary. Kids (and alarmingly parents) can say that they were assaulted by a teacher because they didn't get a grade they wanted, or someone can have a disagreement with an adult and say that the person assaulted their kid at a play date. The law is there not only to punish, but to protect those who are innocent.
This happens much less often than you would think. The fact is that children rarely lie about being sexually abused, so if they say something happened, they are usually telling the truth.
I think it's become much more of an issue recently that it was previously... particularly teenage girls accusing male teacher of sexual misconduct when they get a bad grade. But regardless of the actual statistics, which clearly there aren't any, innocent people shouldn't be charged with no trial/due process simply because we all agree to hate child sex offenders.
I admire chick filas president for standing up for what he believes. It's his personal opinion and it's his business, I understand his belief is very unpopular to some, but he isn't donating to gay hate groups.. He is donating to groups that he believes protect the unity of marriage (it's his Christian belief and it's a Christian company so I honestly don't know why people were so surprised).
There was a great article the other day, I think it's called "in defense of chick fil a". I'm on my phone so no link but you can google it.
I am NOT trying to start a gay marriage debate, at all. I just think anyone who has such strong beliefs (either way) should be able to stand up for them without getting attacked.
Giving money to an organization that "protects the unity of marriage" and saying it's not anti-gay is just like giving money to an organization that "protects the unborn fetus" and saying it's not anti-abortion.
And if you want to say it's not "anti-gay"....fine. But it is certainly anti-gay marriage which is one of the biggest reasons everyone is up in arms.
Is it a fine line? Yes. But by protecting the way one envisions marriage to be it says "I don't value the way you would like to envision your relationship and rather, I'm so scared of it that, I need to fight like hell to protect the way I envision my relationship because who knows what would happen if everyone was allowed to be in a recognized union with whomever the eff they want!"
BUT....I will say, kudos to him. Yes, please do stand up for what you believe it. Everyone. I wish more businesses were open about it. And leave the consumer to make decisions about supporting businesses that support things they do or do not agree with.
Anti-gay or not, I prefer to do my business with more secular businesses, anyway. I prefer my chicken without a side of Jesus.
I mostly lurk but my UO is that I can't stand when people think it's ok to offend people who believe in Jesus by using God as a joke. It wouldn't be ok if we started saying "Jew" or "Muslim" and making fun of them yet our society is completely ok with disrespecting Christians by saying things like "with a side of Jesus". And I also cannot stand when people lump all Christians into a group as if all Christians share the same basi values and morals.

So.....Chick-fil-a can (IMO) be quite disrespectful to gay people but it's not okay for me to say a flippant comment like "with a side of Jesus"? (Though, honestly, this is the base of all these problems....no one can let the other side just BE.) Should I have phrased it as "I prefer to eat in a place that doesn't blare Christian music (as it's not something I like to listen to) and that isn't as obvious with its religious leanings (as it's not my style)?" Or are you offended that I don't want to eat at a blatantly Christian restaurant? That's okay - I have to accept that society trusts me as much as they do a rapist since I have no religious affiliation (which I find very troubling and scary).
And this isn't supposed to be as inflammatory as it probably seems, but isn't identifying as a Christian all about being part of a group that shares the same basic values and morals? (Or do you mean that there are different branches of Christianity and certain branches have different values/morals?)
Ok, I'm going in a totally different direction for my UO. I think there should be a limit on how long politicians can campaign. They should only get 6 weeks to actively campaign before elections. It really pisses me off that politicians who are currently in office can spend so much of their "working time" campaigning when they should be working (ahem, Michelle Bachman).

People "make fun" of Jews all the time like when someone is being cheap or stingy they say something like oh they must be Jewish.
And isn't the point of labeling yourself a 'Christian' to lump yourself and define your values and morals being that which is based off the Bible and god and all that BS?

While we are on the topic of religion.... I am freaking tired of people trying to shove religion down my throat going DOOR TO DOOR. Keep your freaking fliers to yourself, they pollute my lawn. I don't want to hear about Jesus and I don't want to hear about "the word". I heard about it enough in my 9 years of Catholic school and that was enough to make me never want to walk into a Church again. I'm agnostic and I plan on staying that way because religion seems to corrupt more than help. I believe I can do more to help others by myself and "god" would be more accepting of that then sitting in a church and listening to someone preach at me for over an hour.
Seriously though, get off my front step. It's enough to make me want to petition for MD to adapt the "stand your ground" law!

About the comment about lumping Christians together. Maybe I'm putting words in her mouth, but I think she meant that there are many very different branches of Christianity, some that are against gay marriage, some that aren't. So it is unfair to lump all Christians in the "anti-gay" category.

My UO (apparently) is that I think it's ridiculous to respect people who stand by their beliefs when those beliefs involve denying rights to a group of people.
I don't get why this CFA stuff is news. It's been known for years that they were a "Christian" company and they donated to "Christian" causes. What exactly did people think that meant?
Here's my real UO: When a group identifies themselves as "Christian", I assume their agenda is one of two things: 1) To convert others to Christianity 2) To deny rights to other people (women, gays, etc.)

That's like saying Muslims hate America and are suicide bombers.
Yeah there are certain parts of Christianity that do those things, but lumping all Christians together is just ignorant. I think it's just too bad that some extreme groups have to give the majority a bad name.

I never even said I was Christian. Nor did I say anything about Chick-Fil-A. My issue was using other people's Gods name in a way that is offensive. And no, saying a person is Christian does not lump them into one category. There's soooo many branches of Christianity (I could list them all but that would take a while) and each branch has variations in what they believe. It's is ignorant to assume every "Christian" believes the exact same thing.

I know people make fun of other religions but I said that out society is completely ok with doing this to Christians. Making fun of Christians is an accepted practice yet makin fun of Muslims or Jewish (or whatever religion you would like to insert here) is taboo. Yes people do it, but a larger portion of SOCIETY sees it as inappropriate.
And maybe you should take a class on religion if you think Christianity is based on what you said above. I don't know why you don't understand that there are deferences among different branches of Christianity.

(I was raised catholic too!) I totally read that wrong! I thought you we're the one using the generalization and saying that in a way that was making fun. Sorry! I hate when people use that lame arguement!
And I agree, it is not just something that just happens in Catholic churches (or Christian, Jewish, Buddist churches/temples/etc). I don't think it really involved religions at all. It's the people.

Oh, man. I'm not even going to dignify this. All that "BS"...
I know in the US you are innocent until proven guilty, but when it deals with any sexual abuse against a child, I believe you are guilty until proven innocent
I usually only lurk but had to pipe up about this one. Just last week I dealt with a report that a mandated reporter (teacher) reported to CSB and the police that a father was molesting his two daughters that he was raising on his own. Why did she report this? They both had red rings around their mouths and warts on their hands. She thought maybe the warts on their hands were from genital warts that maybe the father could have passed to them. This father was listed as a suspect and these girls had to be seen by doctors who said these things were not caused from sexual abuse, the girls played together and just kept passing the virus from the warts back and forth. They also are both very prone to chapped skin, specifically on their faces. The girls never claimed their father abused them.
How horrible that he would be guilty until proven innocent if we went about things that way in this country.

That's like saying Muslims hate America and are suicide bombers.
Yeah there are certain parts of Christianity that do those things, but lumping all Christians together is just ignorant. I think it's just too bad that some extreme groups have to give the majority a bad name.

Yup.

"Making fun of Christians is an accepted practice"
^ Really? How so?
I think most of the things you say is BS. Just sayin......

Shrugs* Maybe she's talking about how people feel its OK to make fun of Christians because of all the pedophiles they've found in churches across the span of christianity (not just catholics)?
Because it is done ALL the time. And not frowned upon.

I am a baptized Catholic... and I was raised Catholic. I was giving a freaking example as to why I know some people make fun of Christians/Catholics etc... I don't think it's right that people use this generalization to make fun of a church even though I don't practice anymore.
Someone is UBER defensive and needs to chill out. Oh and if you are saying abuse doesn't happen in Christian churches then you are the ignorant one

Once again, my bad!

Oh, man. I'm not even going to dignify this. All that "BS"...
