Maternity leave call!!

Boss called me this morning asking when I plan on taking my maternity leave. I told her I wanted to stay as long as I could & haven't really thought that out.

Due date is Dec 1st. She thinks I should take it late October...

When do you ladies plan on leaving work? This is my first time so I'm not sure when is the best time?? If I can still work I prefer to work....

Re: Maternity leave call!!

  • This is my first, too, but I plan on working until I deliver. I have to take short term disability after the baby is born, so I'm saving as much of that time as I can! I'm lucky to have the option to work from home, so I will probably switch from the office to my home office around 38 weeks.

I will leave when I go into labor.

No way I would start in October. If you want a few weeks before LO is born MAYBE I would start at Thanksgiving, but first babies are late... alot.

I plan on taking 12 weeks maternity leave... if I started in October I would have to go back to work less than 6 weeks after LO was born.

  • Wow that is a little early to start your maternity leave.  I am going to have a c section.  I plan on staying at work until like a day before it is scheduled.  If your job allows you that much time I would take it.  I will only be allowed 2 months but wish I could have more since I too am a FTM.

  • I'm working up until I deliver or my due date, whichever is first.  That seems to be pretty common where I work -- My boss stayed at work through most of her labor to wrap things up/work one more day (she nearly didn't make it to the hospital, so I'm not using her as my role model, but you get the pt.).  I can only take the 12 weeks allowed under FMLA, and I want as much time at home with our baby.

  • Like hell would I start my leave in October, unless heaven forbid the baby decides to make a very early entrance.

I plan to start my leave the 1st workday after the baby is born.

  • I'm in CA, so I get SDI starting at 36 weeks and have CFRA to protect my job until 18 weeks postpartum, so I'll probably go out (as I did last time) at 36 weeks.  It was soo nice to have some time to myself to get last minute things done for the baby, nap, take long walks...those last few weeks last time.  And my son came the night of his due date.  With this one, it will be nice to have some time to get ready, and also to spend some quality one on one time with my little boy before he becomes a big brother.

  • October? Really? Wow...why is she suggesting so early? I am a teacher in a Public School and I am working up until I go into Labor and then starting my Maternity Leave for 12 weeks.

It isn't possible for you to tell her you are working until you go into Labor? What a bummer if not!

  • If taking time off before baby arrives doesn't effect how much time you are able to take off afterwards, then I would say go out early for sure! October sounds like way too early though. I would say maybe early/mid November.

I get 4 weeks prior to the baby off at 60% of my pay. If I don't take it, I loose it. I can't add it to afterwards. I will most likely be going out 3 weeks prior to my EDD.

  • Has your boss had a kid in the past?  Is your job something that requires you to do heavy lifting or be exposed to chemicals dangerous to the baby (you'd be already reassigned if that were the case).

For Dec. 1, maybe late Nov maybe (i.e. the American Thanksgiving) but why would you want to be out 2 months before the due date unless the dr was to put you onto bed rest?  You'd be sitting around twiddling the thumbs bored and then how would that impact the amount of time available afterwards?

I already talked with my HR department, maternity leave starts counting on the day of the birth, we get 6 weeks afterwards if V birth, if Csection it's 8 weeks.  That is "maternity leave" for public school teachers in California.  If need/want to be out before birth, need a dr's note stating there's a medical reason and call it in as a personal illness day up until the day of the birth.  I'll go as long as I can stand it or until the says it's time to start staying home, but am not looking forward to waddling around the classroom about to pop.   In terms of salary impact, if we have enough sick days saved up to cover the 6-8 weeks of maternity leave, we get paid in full.  If there isn't, we get a portion of each day's worth of salary (small portion).

  • My plan is to work up until baby comes. Depending on whether we feel he's going to late.. I may start my leave a little early though. I have PTO and carryover sick time that expires by the end of December, so I need to make sure that I have time to use both of those. I would hate to lose even a week of maternity leave!

  • I also plan on working until I deliver - or until my due date. Which ever comes first.

However, I work in a kitchen on my feet for 8+ hours so if it's becoming difficult to work I'll either cut my hours or start my leave a week or two early.

  • I also plan on working until I deliver.  With DS, I worked a full day the day before I delivered.

  • I'd have your leave start the Monday after Thanksgiving break if your work is going to need some time to adjust to having you gone so that when the baby does come, you won't be getting phone calls and such. However, I would say it depends on how long you are going to have time off, too.

  • I plan on working till i deliver.  I can get 6 weeks for V and 8 for C section, unless doc. orders other wise.  But I also have to use ALL my PTO time first. I'm hoping that I'll have 2 1/2 weeks by then and maybe i'll take  a few days prior  off, then add my 6(or 8) weeks to that.

  • Exactly I thought October was say too early! & no she doesnt have kids.

When she said October, I told her I planned on working as long as I could if I could until delivery even better! I want as much time with my baby... but then she joked "Yeah, but I don't want you delivering in the office"...

But thanks ladies! I knew October was way too soon!! :)

  • I'm planning to work up until I go into labor.  Since I work in the hospital where I'll be delivering, I'm not concerned - I'll just have to walk downstairs (or make someone push me in a wheelchair) should my water break :)

My OCD tendencies have caused me to calculate my expected sick time and vacation time that I should have accrued by December.  I should have 8-9 weeks of paid time, and then basically another week of time from holiday pay (yay for Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Day, and Martin Luther King all being during maternity leave!!).

Not happy that I have to use up ALL of my sick and vacation time before short term disability, though.  I have so much time that I won't even be able to use it... what's the point?  Ugh.

  • My goal is 36 weeks (Lord willing). I'm sure I won't be able to still do my job much past that. My job is very physical and involves a ton of bending, lifting and being on my feet. I'll have short term disability that will cover up to 12 weeks before delivery and 8 after. So, my goal is to make it until Thanksgiving, but after that, I'll probably enjoy the holidays and savor the last moments before the real fun starts.

  • Hoping to work until the end.  Last time I went on bedrest at 32 weeks and that ate up my FMLA so I had to go back to work 8 weeks pp.  It stunk.

I plan to work until Dec.1 (due the 11th).  With my DD, I worked until 38weeks 5 days, and went into labor at 39 weeks exactly.  With my DS, I worked until 39 weeks 3 days, and went into labor at work.  I am hoping to avoid that this time, but don't want to take too much time off before the baby is born.  Not sure why you would need to leave so early unless you were having complications...

  • I worked until the day before my water broke with DS (so until 39 weeks exactly).  While yes, I was big and uncomfortable at times at the end, there is no way I'd take ANY time off before the baby was actually here knowing now how much I wanted to be home with him after he was born.

I wouldn't even plan on being done on my due date, this time I'll wait until I have the baby before I finish working.

  • Due November 30, last day of work is November 2nd.

Mostly because I am alone with two children whose parents both work at least 45 minutes away. I wouldn't feel comfortable going into labor there.

  • What the Nellie, October!? Seriously?

You only get 12 weeks of FMLA if you need to take that, and it starts the DAY you start taking off. That would leave you with 4 weeks before you returned to work, what the heck?

Is anyone else doing state disability during their leave? I understand that it pays 55% of your income?

I get Short Term Disability via work.  Don't know if Virginia has state disability.  I get 100% for 6 weeks and 70% until I go back to work.  If my doc decides I need to go out early I get up to 26 weeks of leave so yay for that!.

  • When I was still teaching, I worked all the way up until labor with the first 3 - #2, I had mild labor all day and just got my loose ends tied up thru the day, had a baby at 8pm. #4 same thing, had my sub shadow me all day in preparation for when I had lo (due about 11 days later), but ended up having the baby the next day. Really, since you never know when lo will be there unless you have a scheduled c/s with no early labor, I'd save all my maternity leave for the baby.

  • I'll weigh in since I'm not a FTM. My first was almost 3 weeks early. I too planned to work up until delivery. In hindsight I should've taken 4 wks off prior, because if you don't take those 4 wks of pre-delivery disability, you forfeit them. That wasn't explained to me clearly. Once I hit 35 wks I was SO uncomfortable anyway. I should've just taken the 4 wks. So, end of Oct. sounds just about right to me.

  • I worked until my due date with my first one.  I'm a hairdresser so I don't really get a leave.  I can take off as much as I want but I don't get paid.  So after my first one I went back after 3 weeks.  I had a pretty easy delivery so I was ok to go back.  I would see how long you can wait before you leave work.  You will know when your ready for a break.
  • That is really, really early to start. Most people work up until they can't anymore, or go into labor. I plan on working until the Dr. says stop, or I go into labor. I will just be taking the two months off after I have the baby.

  • I am also a FTM and am due on Dec 4th, I plan on my last day being the Friday before to give me the weekend to relax and finish things up.

I think October is too early, I would probally go the end of November the earliest, GL

I told my boss I'd be taking between 10-12 weeks off.  I'll decide when I leave and when I come back.

It sounds like pregnant ladies scare her! I would work up until you deliver, unless you want some time off beforehand, then maybe right before Thanksgiving.

  • Im due December 19th and my first day of Mat leave will be Monday December 3rd, I'll be taking my full year (Canadian) so my return will be December 1st, 2013
  • In Canada we get a full year of paid maternity leave so I will be working right up to my Due date to ensure I get the most time at home with our beautiful Daughter.
  • I am planning on giving birth at my desk, while on a conference call. SO I would probably be the worst person to ask.
