Sorry!
At my last appointment (last week, on Monday) I was 1cm dilated. They didn't tell me how effaced I was and I forgot to ask. Since then, I've had BH contractions on and off, but nothing stronger or more frequent than usual. In fact the only difference I've noticed is that I keep waking up in the night to pee (yep, I was lucky and escaped that for the entire pregnancy until now). I may have lost some of my mucous plug yesterday but I'm not entirely sure. (TMI warning) I haven't noticed any more discharge than usual since then, so I'm thinking I didn't?
Today, this baby is bearing down, hardcore. Every time I get up (or, if I'm already up, every time I take a step) there is so much pressure that it takes my breath away. It's making it really difficult to get on with anything.
So I can't resist asking: is this a sign she's coming soon? Am I going to go to my appointment tomorrow and have them tell me I'm 2 or 3cm or more?
Also, one I keep forgetting to ask my OB: for a first baby how far dilated can you get before 'something' happens, either labour beginning or the hospital intervening? I know it's not uncommon for STMs to be several cm dilated for a long time, but I have no idea about first babies.
Re: It's a "when will this baby come?" post
Dilating before labour doesn't mean anything. Cervical checks before labour don't mean anything. Unless you enjoy a hand up the hoo-ha, I'd pass on future checks.
Could be tomorrow, could be 2 weeks from now. It's a crazy ride.

Yep. Baby will come when baby is ready. That is all you can really be sure of.
For me, this did not make a difference. Sorry, I know it's disappointing.
DD1 came two weeks early with absolutely no sign in the days before. Water broke, contractions started, and I had a baby.
DD2 was incredibly low, lots of pressure, dilated 4+ at a 37 week check, and she stayed in until 42 weeks. Sex, walking, talking to her, you name it... if I thought it was safe, I tried it to get my body going. Nope. She finally came on her own right at 42 weeks when I was sure I would be pregnant forever.
Those last few weeks are rough. You are constantly wondering if every little sign means your body is about to start the labor process. Hang in there the best you can and know it will eventually happen.
Agree! I'm a FTM too but I've declined all my internals, because it isn't about what you're dialted, etc. It's all about contractions! I'm just letting baby do it's thing, and my OB is really respectful about that.
In my opinion, the LESS you MESS is the BEST! When it comes to my hoo-ha!
Cervical checks mean nothing. But I was in your place not too long ago and even though I KNEW they meant nothing I was still hoping someone would tell me when my baby was coming! So I know the feeling :-)
I had a cervical check at 36 weeks (standard at my MW's office to check for dilation/make sure baby is head down) and was 2cm dilated. She told me I could have been 2 cm for months...no way to know. I lost parts of my plug over the next seven days. The day before 37 weeks I saw my MW again and declined cervical check. I now wish I would have had one because my baby was born the next day and I'm curious to know if I had dilated more! I had a fast labor and was already dilated to an 8 when I got to the hospital after 2 1/2 hours of laboring at home (total time including pushing was 4 hours) so I wonder if I wasn't a 3 or 4 the day before. I didn't feel the "bearing down" sensation that you were feeling. In fact I didn't even have a single painful bh until I was in labor. I did lose the rest of my plug and had bloody show about four hours before labor started. But everyone's different.
Try to rest easy, mama. The baby will come eventually :-)
