January 2013 Moms

If one more person...

makes a comment about how big I am, I will snap. Last night when I weighed myself my scale said I've gained just under five pounds (and that fluctuates every day from 3-7lbs) and I'm exactly on my 2nd trimester today. People in my office keep making comments about "Wow you look pregnant" and "When I was pregnant no one knew til I was 7mos!" and my personal favorite "If you're this big now, you'll be massive at 9mos!"

WTAMF?!

Am I really that big?

image

Yes, I am whining. I'm sorry, but I kind of want to cry. I feel like I'm doing something to hurt my baby or something.

Re: If one more person...

  • I think you're totally cute, and I don't think you look too big!  But, if you were really really thin before (I say "really really" because I think you even look thin still), than maybe they're just comparing.  And, it's not like they're saying YOU are fat or big, they are primarily referring to your baby bump and generally people do this because they're excited for you.

I think you look cute.  Sorry some people are being insensitive, though.

  • I usually get "wow, are you sure you aren't carrying twins?" or my personal favorite "You've really popped!" (like I'm a Thanksgiving turkey). And this is usually while they're attempting to rub my tummy like I'm Buddha. I really don't understand why people think its okay to make such comments to pregnant ladies, but its like they see a baby bump and their brains remove the filter to their mouth. You're bump is super cute though! :)

  • That's funny because I feel the opposite. I'm thinking...If one more person tells me "You don't look pregnant at all!...."

I keep getting this from co-workers. I've gained about 5 or 6 pounds. I'm in mostly maternity pants, unless I force myself to be uncomfortable. I feel pregnant. I see a small bump but I know it's not that noticeable, especially in work clothes. So stop reminding me I don't look pregnant, because it just makes me feel thick and chunky.

  • It's better than what people tell me, "You don't look pregnant. When I was x amount of weeks, I was a lot bigger." I always think, "Thanks. Now I wonder if there is something wrong with me/baby."

    This :-/

I know my bump isn't huge yet, but I definitely have a bump.  I know people are just being nice, but seriously, just tell me I look a little pregnant so I don't feel like I just look like I have a chubby tummy.

  • OMG!  We look the same.  I'm up 6 pounds according to my Dr.'s scale on Monday.  I feel like I look really big, and DH likes to tease me.  I think it's just my body type.  I'm shorter, and there just isn't anywhere for it to go, but it certainly looks like more than 6 pounds.

I haven't encountered anyone rude enough to say anything, but I definitely look like I've been hitting McDonald's more than the gym lately.

Me: unexplained infertility - annovulatory DH: testicular cancer survivor!! TTC since June 2009 BFP May 11, 2012 EDD January 24, 2013 June 1, 2012 - first u/s, heartbeat 124 BPM!! June 22, 2012 - heard the heartbeat 9w1d 181 BPM!! 24 hours of labor, 4 1/2 hours of pushing, and IT'S A BOY! Welcome to the world my miracle, we prayed and prayed for you, and we can't believe you're here!
  • Thanks for the support guys. I know a lot of it is in my head. I had an eating disorder and I know it will never go away fully, but it can be hard to focus when people are saying I'm huge. The most important thing is that baby is healthy. If I get big for that to happen, so be it.

And just for the record, I've been in dresses and maternity pants since 8wks. They are SOOOO much more comfortable.

  • I am 13 weeks today and that looks like my 11 week picture (first baby). I was surprised at how soon I popped out and EVERYONE at work is commenting too.

Whenever anyone says anything I actually get excited becauase I am so happy to be pregnant and so happy that everyone can see it!

Just be secure in your self image and know that everyone's tummy grows at different times in different ways. You are beautiful, ignore everyone who makes you feel like crap. They are probably really excited as well but don't understand that it makes you uncomfortable.

  • Uh those people are crazy. I'm bigger than you and feel like a fat cow. But I get the same comment. People just lose their common sense when they know someone is pregnant.

  • My fibroid has me measuring 5 weeks ahead. So instead of looking like I'm 15, I look 20 weeks pregnant! Be grateful, your bump is cute! People are crazy though. I'm really shocked that they get so open off of seeing a pregnant woman that they feel it's appropriate to touch without asking. So weird! I guess I'm not really minding it so much. This baby can use all the love it can get!

  • If you're really big, then so am I because my bump is pretty similar. I had a completely flat stomach prior to getting pregnant and by 5 weeks, I was already showing a little bit of bloat. It's continued to get bigger and I no longer think it's bloat. I haven't "popped" per say, but I'd definitely consider it baby.

Some show sooner than others and that's all there is to it. I know that a lot of STM show sooner than FTM, but just because you're a FTM doesn't mean you're not allowed to show early.

ETA: I don't want to steal your thread, but if you want to compare our "HUGE" bumps, mine can be found in my blog - link below. :)

You are not too big! Goodness, my belly looked like that BEFORE I was pregnant. People just do not know when to shut up and this is especially true around pregnant ladies. You look adorable and I'm sorry people are running their mouths. I totally understand being sensitive about stuff like that - my mom keeps telling me if I get too big I will get GD. Thanks mom!

  • I sort of look like you right now. I have a fairly small frame and I went from nothing to this weird "kangaroo pouch" it's not a cute bump but I look bigger.

One person touched it and said something about a baby and all of us who were already in the loop looked at her & one girl said "how did you know!?" She was referring to my "food baby" but she felt dumb when we let her know it was real!

  • oh my goodness, you have an adorable lil bump, nothing massive or huge about it! it looks great on you, and dont worry about everyone else!!! I havent gained a single lb (in face ive lost 12lbs), but i have a pretty big bump too and people are always saying 'geez, how much weight did you gain, your getting huge" my response is, 'i didnt gain weight, im growing a person give me a break!'

This is what you need to do:

Look them in the eye and tell them to SHUT UP. Seriously. Each pregnancy is different...don't let other's opinions get you down Zona.

  • People are nuts. And rude.

  • Aside from the "massive at 9mo" comment I think it is helpful to keep in mind that most people mean it as a compliment because they know we're supposed to get bigger, and in general big babies mean healthy babies, and it is also a weird way of implying how small you "used to" be.  I say "used to" because you're still small, just with a cute baby bump!  It would just help if they could stop and think for a second and say "wow, your baby is getting so big" not "wow YOU are getting so big".

And your weight gain is totally normal for where you are in your pregnancy and I now have bump envy.
