did they just give you fluids or did they monitor you or check baby at all? I haven't been able to keep anything down today...not even water...about 30 mins ago I ate a cookie (kinda big one) and drank a small glass of water...if that stays down I'm wondering if I will be okay?
I am just trying to decided if I can try to manage it on my own or if I should go in...I know you cant put a price on health but I am also worried about the cost of the E.R bill if I go (20% is what I am responsible for)
I'm thinking if I can keep the cookie and water down for more than an hour maybe I can try to manage it with broth, pedialyte etc....if I throw it up I will go in...I feel so crappy and kind of weak as it is..hoping I can manage it.....but I am a little worried..
Re: anyone here gone to E.R for hyperemesis?
I've been lucky enough to avoid it, but I have a friend who had to be hospitalized for it with both her pregnancies - once for nearly 2 weeks. Both times she started off in the ER and was eventually admitted when fluids weren't enough.
Your approach seems sensible; if you can keep something down, that's certainly encouraging, but I know it can be really awful; good luck!
I went in June 26th for Hyperemesis. I was miserable. They gave me 2 liters of IV fluids and 8mg of Zofran IV. They never did an Ultrasound because I wasn't having abdominal cramping or bleeding. Ive been fine ever since that visit managing with my prescription of 4mg Zofran ODT. Warning that stuff will make you constipated.
My insurance also pays 20%. My bill was around 300 or so. I figured it was worth it to have the nausea under control.
I have met my dedictible so ins pays 80% I pay 20%......
I don't have the same experiences and wisdom as DC2London, but I agree with this completely, bolded parts were exactly what I was going to say!
I did. They kept me for awhile, gave me three liters of fluids, a couple injections of Zofran and Reglan until I pretty much said, just let me go home.
They didn't check the baby or anything. They did take blood and urine for some tests. This was at 6-7 weeks though.
I would call your OB and see what she recommends. They told me to just watch out for signs of dehydration- headache, very yellow urine, dizziness, etc. When I had those, I went in. Try drinking little tablespoons of ginger ale instead of water, maybe the occasional saltine. That can help stop the cycle long enough for you to get some medicine in. Then you can increase your fluids as you feel better.
ETA: When I called, it was after hours, so I was sent to the OB floor of the hospital, and they told me I was too early in my pregnancy to be admitted there, so I would have to go down to the ER. I don't know what their cut off is.
The cut off is 20 weeks, everything else goes to the ER.
For the OP, I would say try many of the things the other ladies recommended, watch for signs of dehydration(listed above in quote).
I have gone in to the ER this pregnancy for Zofran and fluids but in actuality I really didn't need to go in that badly and would not have if my copay was higher. My OB had not answered my email requests for Zofran ODT and I was tired of puking all day. My copay was only 5 dollars so I decided to go in.Plus I'd called in sick and needed a work note.
I work in the ER so my coworker tried to see if she could find the HB with our doppler but it wasn't something the doc ordered.
