~4 mos & "biting"?

I worked last night, and I pumped while driving my kiddos to MILs (20+ minute drive).  When we got there, DD was rooting, so I let her nurse before I left.  She clamped down... if she had teeth she would probably have broken the skin.  I figured she did this because there was not a whole lot of milk in there, and didn't worry too much about it.

When she nursed last night after I picked her up, she didn't do it again.  But she did this again this morning with my normal morning engorgement.

Anyway...  how do I get my 4 month old to stop this?

  • My son would do something similar, like clenching his jaw. I think it was that he just discovered he could control his mouth/jaw and he got bored with it and moved on. You could do as if she were really biting and unlatch her every time she does it and tell her "no biting."

  • Try letting her "chew" your finger or a teether. sometimes they want to chew while teething, other times they are practicing chewing. My DD will unlatch then chew her fingers a bit then go back to nursing. With her teething she gets uncomfortable at times and we give her a cold wash cloth to chew.
