September 2012 Moms

Growth restriction sucks. (And a PIP.)

I had a routine prenatal visit today, and as per standard procedure, they measured my fundal height. As of June 26th, it was 28cm. July 10th, it was 28.5. Today, it was 28. My midwife asked if I could hang around for an ultrasound, and I said yes, because even I know that's weird for things to be not only not growing, but regressing.

They send me to the u/s department and the tech looked at everything. She wasn't allowed to tell me much but she said he's head down still, and my amniotic fluid looked great. We had thought that if maybe he was transverse, that would explain why my fundal height was weird. No dice.

My midwife called me less than 2 hours later (love her!) to tell me what she had seen from the u/s. Little dude is currently chilling in the 8th percentile. She said anything below 10th is cause for concern. They're considering him growth restricted for now, but he's "borderline" so they're not going to require me to come in twice a week for NSTs and ultrasounds...yet. They're going to do biophysical profiles once a week for the next couple weeks, and then another growth ultrasound in three weeks. If he's still growth restricted, I'll be officially labeled as "high risk" and they'll induce me somewhere around 37-39 weeks.

I know I'm not the only person to ever deal with this, but it really feels sucky. I just want a healthy baby and a healthy delivery, and I feel like I've done something wrong because somehow, in my head, it's my fault that he's not growing enough. Any advice? Experience?

The upside of the day was that I got a great 3D picture of our little guy. He's pretty freaking cute, IMO...not that I'm biased or anything...

  • That sucks that he's not growing very fast, but it doesn't mean that he'll be anything but healthy, so keep that in mind. :)

Of course, that's easier said than done, but you know what I mean. ;)

  • That's a great picture! I don't have any knowledge of growth restriction so I can't speak to that aspect except to wish you luck.
  • I went through the same exact thing with DD. It sucks, but she is 100% healthy, just small. Are you petite at all? I am only 4'11" so I wasn't surprised when I started measuring small. I was induced at 38.5 weeks when she dropped from the 5th percentile into the 4th. She was 5 lbs., 11 oz. and 18 inches at birth but completely healthy and normal. She is still petite. It was very stressful at the end of my pregnancy to deal with so I know what you are going through, but I wouldn't worry much. It seems to me that doctors would rather err on the side of caution than be wrong, and that's likely what will happen with your situation over the next few weeks. Good luck!

Yeah, I'm pretty short. 5'1". MH is also quite short, I think about 5'5". I informed my midwife that I was a really small baby and that my family tends to make extremely small babies (I was late and was 5lbs10oz.), and she did say that could be a factor.

  • I just had an u/s today too, and my baby was about the 12%ile, but especially small around the abdomin.  I know they want me to go back in 3 weeks for a repeat u/s, but I don't see my Dr. until Thurs to go over the results.  She's been concerned with my lack of weight gain, but as far as I know my fundal growth has been normal or behind by about a week.  I'm about 5'2" and DH is about 5 '6" so we also likely have a small baby.  T&P for both of our LOs to gain weight and size...  I feel like I don't know how worried to be about this, esp without hearing from my Dr...
  • Oh, he is a cutie!!

Hang in there.  You're doing all you can and he will be just fine.  Hugs.

  • I went through the exact same thing with DD2..it's scary but she turned out okay. We only got down to 12% around 31wks but crazily she was 50% at 35wks. She was still small at birth but not growth restricted..she is still small for age though. Thinking good thoughts for your little man, hope he gets a growth spurt!

I think this has a lot to do with it, then. My DH is only 5'8" and very slight, and my parents are both small. I was 5 lbs. 8 oz. full-term, so I never even expected to have a large baby. This baby is measuring small already, so I am expecting to go through this again at some point with him as well. I would not be overly concerned-- genetics is what it is!

  • You are doing absolutely nothing wrong to affect the size of your baby. Seems like everything will work out well based on what I'm reading from the other ladies. He is going to be perfect so please don't worry about it too much!

  • It's not your fault at all, and I'm sorry you're going through it. My LO was small (even for a 29-week preemie), and the doctor thinks my pre-e/HELLP syndrome restricted her growth for the last week I was carrying her. So I can sympathize with the feeling you're having, but at the same time I know the truth is that things like this can happen even if you are doing everything right. Your LO will do great, even if they induce you at 37 weeks. He still has time to do some catching up though! Best wishes. (PS. Your little guy is adorable!)

I'm sorry this has you stressed out. My last babe was in the same situation, hung out between the 5-10% the whole time, but was born perfectly healthy. Small isn't always bad. My doctor said they don't worry until it falls below 3%. I hope your little one stops worrying you!

  • He is cute. You haven't done anything wrong. I'm currently in the same boat, although I've been in it a tad longer. I've already had my follow up growth ultrasound and am making slow progress. Hopefully you'll have a growth spurt and all will be resolved. All you can do is keep baking away. GL!! Grow baby, grow!

  • Good luck!  I hope everything turns out okay at your next appointment!!

I'm curious though... if the baby is too small (on growth restriction), why do they induce them early?  Why wouldn't they rather leave them in there and keep growing?  Sorry, I've never heard of it.

  • I'm sure you are not doing anything wrong! Hopefully LO will hit a growth spurt soon and put your mind at ease until he arrives.

It kind of just depends on WHY the baby is growth restricted. Sometimes it's caused by issues with the umbilical cord (which doesn't appear to be my issue), which can basically starve the baby or deprive them of oxygen. Severe GR can lead to stillbirth. They're still not entirely sure why my little dude is so tiny...she said that if he stays this way but his stats/biophysical profiles stay looking good, they'll probably let me go to 39 weeks.

  • It sounds like a function of you/your DH's stature but FX that you can grow that baby for as long as possible on the inside!
  • Aw, he IS cute! Definitely don't blame yourself--it sounds like it's all probably just about your and YH's size--you guys just made a little peanut!
  • I have the opposite problem, my dude is in the 93rd percentile, he is a giant. They have been asking more about more about my history (how big was I, how big was my husband, my brother), so I think genetics totally plays a roll. I was a giant baby with a giant head -- 9lbs 8 oz.

Also, I have been going for the twice weekly NSTs and ultrasounds because I have pregnancy induced hypertension, it it is a time suck, but the bonus is you get to see the little guy twice a week.

You got a super cute 3D pic, here is hoping everything else remains even keel for you!

If you have growth restriction from a small or inefficient placenta or a two vessel umbilical cord, the baby is worse off the longer it stays inside because its oxygen and nutritional needs aren't being met.

  • My daughter was born full term at 4lbs 9 ounces and 18 1/4 inches long - she did end up having underlying issues which were found on the ultrasounds (a kinked intestine) and she was in NICU for 17 days because of surgery but that is a rare case.  It sounds like your doctor's have things under control and you should be fine.  BTW, I'm 5' and my husband is 5'6 so we expected small.  My doctors appt is Thursday so we'll see how the current baby is growing...
  • Amazing photo, BV. I hope your little man will be just fine <3

  • I have no advise because my babies are always fat heads, but I will keep you in my thoughts that all goes well with your gorgeous little man. He's adorable. Please keep us posted.
  • This is definitley not your fault at all, from your post you are definitley doing eberything right that you can with this pregnancy. Smile Hopefully your little man catches up and if he doesn't he can still be healthy. Keep your head up ( yes I know easier said then done) and I will continue to send happy thoughts and prayers your way.

As you said you and hubby are fairly small so that can have something to do with it.

  • DD was iugr (she was the size of a 27 seekers when she was born at 31w).

She's still on the (very) lower end of the growth curve, but she's healthy and "normal".

  • Sorry you have to deal with this, but glad that he's still doing well. It is possible he's not as small as they think, so try not to worry too much. This is not a reflection of anything you did or didn't do. Some babies are just smaller or bigger. All you can do is follow doc's orders and hope he cooks as long as possible to get a little bigger. I think the 3D pic is pretty cute too.
