December 2012 Moms

Nervous U/S tech was wrong...

I had an ultrasound at 19 1/2 weeks, and the tech said it was a girl...but she said "I don't see any boy parts...looks like a girl" and I asked her again later if she was sure and she said "yep."

well it wasn't til AFTER that appointment (i'm a first-time mom) that I found out they're not supposed to just look for whether or not there are boy parts...they should be able to see 'girl parts' too. i'm ecstatic we're having a girl and have bought a lot of clothes and painted the nursery...now i'm paranoid that she was wrong.  Is there another ultrasound for a 'low-risk' pregnancy usually? if not i'm going to wonder until the baby is born if she was wrong! i initially wanted a boy but now am so excited for a girl and don't want her to be wrong.

oh and we got a set of pictures after the u/s and there are no pics of 'girl parts' in there either...ugh

  • look at the pic.  Do you see 3 white lines? Can you scan the photo and post?  If you don't really have any issues you probably won't get another U/S for sometime.

That's the thing, she didnt give us any pictures of that area...just the foot, leg, arm, profile, etc... I'm wondering what the heck she was doing. I might ask my dr if I can get another one done--or how much it would cost to do that. i just dont want to be continuing to get little girl clothes and things for the next few months and then be surprised w/a boy. idk if i'm just being paranoid...
  • We just had our U/S on monday and our tech said after she told us its a girl that before she looked for gender all of the other pictures were looking "very girl". So there must be other things they look for besides absence of boy parts. Although its still never 100% accurate.

  • If I were you I would find somewhere to do another one (3d or regular) to confirm. I usually see it cost anywhere from 70-100 bucks but to me it would be so worth it to know for sure. I would hate to stock up for a little girl and her be wrong. On my gender scan they found specific girl parts and printed the ultrasound pic for us. It might be worth the money just for some peace of mind. Good luck!

  • I would do an elective u/s maybe at a local 3D place. They do alot of gender verification scans and they are specifically looking for the gender so you will have lots of pics of the girl or boy parts. I would need a pic so thats what I recommend.

I'm thinking getting a second ultrasound would be the best idea....found a place that does it for $180...it just sucks because we already paid for the ultrasound and I feel like she didn't complete the job. It's frustrating, because if she didn't see anything she should have told us that it was inconclusive, not that we must be having a girl. She did say she could see the cord...and no boy parts. I wish I would've read up about u/s before my appointment so I could've flat out asked her where are the girl parts. Oh well I guess

This is why I am only buying gender neutral items/paints until they are born.  We saw a penis on baby B however the pic was kinda fuzzy on baby A.  I should show you the pic she gave us.  I don't know what she was smoking but you don't even see thighs on the picture..   Keep your receipts or you can take the items back and repurchase them later.

  • They told my mom my baby brother was going to be a girl... this was also 21 years ago... I think my brother wore pink for his first 3 months. LOL
