Who here has a will?

DH and I got one written up and signed before we left DD and went to Vegas since it was the first time we were both away from her and traveling so far from home. It got me thinking how many others actually have a last will. If it weren't for DD, it would have never crossed my mind!

Also, I am curious... If an attorney drew yours up and you don't mind saying, how much did it cost you? We have a good friend that's a lawyer and did it all for free for us and I was wanting to take him and his wife out to eat or get a little something for them! TIA

  • We have one, but havent updated it for DS's guardians(NEED TO DO THAT!)

    It was around $100 dollars.

  • Neither of us have a will but keep saying we need to do that.  $100 isn't bad.  How long does it usually take to get it done?

  • We spoke with an attorney when he was weeks old....but never got it finished, it would have been $500.

Our biggest issue is agreeing to the terms of the Will and whom to leave him with if we are no longer alive....I want my sister, he wants his family....so thats why nothing is made.   and if I pick his family (brother and SIL) I need to break the news to my sister.   Its just hard to do.

  • Yup, the principle of us doing ours was to appoint DD's guardians in case the plane crashed or one of us got lost on the roof or something.... Luckily, DH and I both agreed upon my parents so no fuss there. I can see how differing opinions can delay the process. You can make two separate ones though with what each of you want. I'm pretty sure that they make two separate anyways, at least that's what our friend did for us even though they are 95% the same. Then you can just cross your fingers and hope you are the last to die! haha- the whole process is MORBID!

I thought $500 was about right price wise. WOO! That's a lot of money!

  • No we haven't.  The biggest issue with us is who gets the kids....

  • We don't have one yet...I've been thinking about it but I really don't know who we would make guardian of DD. Its tough!      And now that I have an idea of what it'll cost...ick, probably won't make one anytime soon.  Sad

  • We have a notarized statement explaining who gets A that will suffice for now. We started, but never finished. We are going back to do that in a few weeks. It cost is about $350. Most lawyers have flat fees for these types of things unless it's very complicated.
  • Check with your company or DH's to see if they offer any free legal services. Mine does and covers simple wills so I made a call, got mailed some paperwork (which this reminds me to complete) and then they assign us a lawyer in our state to finalize it all free of charge. If we owned multiple homes or businesses or a few other criteria they wouldn't have covered it but did since its considered a simple will.

We plan on having my sister who is an attorney draw one up for us when we are back in the States next month. We have until then to decide who E will go to if something were to ever happen. He wants his family, I want mine.

  • We did ours through legalzoom.com.  I think it was $69.  The process was really easy.
  • Ours covers guardianship and a trust, which is named as the contingent beneficiary on both DH's and my life insurance policies. We paid $400 for both wills.
