Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Giving foods with milk in them to 11 month old

Hi. My daughter is almost 11 months old. I'm working on coming up with some more interesting dinner options for her. I thought casseroles might be fun, but most of the recipes call for cream based soups or some sort of milk as an ingredient.

Do any of you give your almost one year olds food with milk/dairy baked into it? I know she shouldn't have straight up milk until she is one year, but was wondering about if it is baked into something.

Thanks for any feedback.

  • Cooked milk is fine.  Straight milk can be harder for some babies to digest but the biggest reason for the "no milk" guidance is to ensure parents don't switch to milk and forgo formula/BM.  Before 1, they really do need the added nutrition in the formula/BM but having dairy in addition to that is fine.

  • One of the foods pedi recommended for our 9 month old was mac & cheese, which has cooked milk (duh). Your LO should be fine.

This. If it seems to upset your LO then I'd hold off a little longer. My daughter is breast fed with solids now. She's almost 10months. Last week I started offering her whole milk in her straw sippy with her meals instead of water. Never more than 2ounces for the whole day and she has yet to finish that much. I want her to get used to it before I wean her. She has had other things with milk in them and has never been bothered by them. Sliced swiss, munster or cheddar cheese torn into pieces is one of her favorite snacks.

  • Thanks for your responses. She has had some cheeses and yogurt, but I just wasn't sure if there was something specific about "milk" that it needed to be totally avoided.

I think she'd LOVE mac and cheese. Maybe I'll try that first.

    Thank you!

  • Ditto PP. I never worried about milk or milk products in stuff. LO has had it all along.

Regular milk can just be rough on their systems because of the enzymes. Those enzymes are usually broken down in cooking or in a food process (making yogurt, cheese, butter etc.).

  • We have been giving foods cooked/bakes with WCM since LO was 6 months.  Our guidelines in Canada are to start offering WCM from the age of 9 months.  None of my children have ever had an issue.  It is alright to give them yogourt, cheese, cottage cheese, cream cheese, etc...from 6 months on however some pedis say to avoid WCM until a year in the U.S.

  • It's fine.

I've been giving DS a few ounces of WCM for a few weeks now, but recommendations are different here.

  • We have been giving foods with milk in them to our almost 11 month old for about three months now.  I watched for allergies initially, but she hasn't had any problem.

  • You're just not supposed to give milk as a formula/bm replacement (i.e. AS A DRINK) for a year.  My son has had foods with milk in them since 6 months with no problems.
