Good Days and Bad

So we took A to the county fair on Sunday and we put her in the pen with all the animals. She never even looked at them. Just walked around aimlessly and picked up straw.

These are the days when I realize something is wrong.

Then the next day we go to the water park and she is splashing and playing, still not interacting with other children, but really happy.

We also went to a birthday party on Saturday and she never even looked at the other kids. A nine month old waved hello to me and I got tears in my eyes because my 17 month old doesn't even do this yet.

I guess this is just a mini vent...still new to all of this.

It is so true- there are good and bad days. The good days make me feel like I am on Cloud 9, the bad make me feel like I am in a slump of depression. Hopefully this is just the feeling of having this be new to us; and with time we can focus more on the good stuff. You are not alone.

DS sounds like this at times.

I took him to OT sessions and there was this cute little 6 year old boy always saying hi to DS and one time he threw his arm around DS saying to have fun with the therapist.

And it is sad that DS does not acknowledge this little boy. I liked this little boy because he is friendly when he sees DS.

DH chalked it up to DS being a jerk because he noticed when he took DS to OT that he saw the same little boy.

{{hugs}} I know how you feel. If you put Chris in a kiddie pool with another child, you'd swear he's not on the spectrum. He laughs, splashes and will roughhouse with the other child. You take him out of the pool, different story. To give you some idea - we considered it a big step when we were told by his teacher that just recently, during day care time (the center has an in-house day care that allows them to bring the EI kids for socialization), he will actually hand a peer a toy when they're all playing at the table. This is a major step for him. Most times he just watches other kids but doesn't interact (unless they try to engage him and even then it has to be some pretty entertaining engaging) - although Saturday at the playground he was playing in this tunnel thing that has rollers with numbers on them and he got all excited (he loves numbers) and shared "zero!" very excitedly with some kids there - they ended up walking away but still, he shared.

Concentrate on the good days. Keep them in your pocket for the bad days. {{hugs}}
