When will milk "expire" if I move from reg to deep freezer

I have bm in my freezer from March and on. I've read different "expiration dates" in different places- anywhere from 3 months to 6 months in a regular freezer and 6 months to a year in a deep freezer. I will be moving all of my milk to a deep freezer this week. When will it be good until? I'm especially confused about the older milk, like the March milk is almost five months old now but when I move it to the deep freezer then is it good for six months or no because it sat in a regular freezer first?

I should also mention - I know it's supposed to smell and taste sour when it goes bad, but every time I've tried it doesn't taste sour but not sweet either. I feel like I can't judge it this way.

Thanks for your help!

Milk that is 5 months in a regular freezer probably won't make it another 6 months by being put in the deep freezer. It spoils slowly over time, and you can't reverse that by making it super cold for the last month, KWIM? If it's 5 months in the regular freezer, I would say use it within 2 months if you keep it in the deep freezer.

Basically, milk is said to last twice as long in the deep freezer. So take whatever time is left in the 6 month "window" of a regular freezer, and multiply that by 2 if you move it now. There are no guarantees, though, and if you can use the older milk at a faster rate I would do that to insure that none of it spoils.

  • Either way, I'd be getting that March milk out of there. I think Amy gave you a good rule of thumb. A frozen stash requires rotation - it's probably easiest to give 1 bottle from frozen milk/day at daycare and then freeze 1 bag a day to replace.
  • I had frozen milk in August 2011 in my regular freezer I moved it to a deep freezer in Mid October.  I never rotated my stash. I saved it all for when I stopped pumping at work in May.  So in May 2012 my August 2011 milk was still good.

This is what I've done, and haven't had any problems.

  • thanks everyone. i'm planning on using the freezee milk for two feedings a day while i'm at work. i'm hoping i can nurse before work and twice after work ( i get home at 3:15). i'll pump twice at work and save that for future use. is that what rotating a stash means ?
