What will be your contraceptive of choice?

LO is only 2 weeks old but I am already thinking of what type of contraceptive I will start using (once I can).

What type of birth control will you/are you using now?

Re: What will be your contraceptive of choice?

  • I am breastfeeding so, right now we are choosing to use nothing but Condoms. I did not want to go on the mini pill as I have heard that it still may cause problems with supply for some people. While I would love to do an IUD, I am just not that comfortable with it and the fact that I have had 2 c-sections with the scar tissue and such.

  • I don't really know, yet...

I don't want to use anything hormonal because I'm breastfeeding and don't want to deal with the whole additional hormone thing...

I'm not super comfortable with an IUD.

I'm not super comfortable with a diaphram.

After DD1, DH and I used a combination of natural family planning, condoms, and simple infrequency...It was successful, I suppose, since I didn't get pregnant until we were ready, but I'm really hoping our sex life is a little more...frequent, at least!

I don't know that I am very helpful...

  • I am getting my IUD (mirena) put in on Thursday. After doing much research and speaking with my doctor at my 6wk appt, I decided that was the best option for us. I am breastfeeding, so my choices were limited and it was actually easy to narrow down the choices to just one the more I looked into it. I did not want the mini pill at all for a couple different reasons, one being that you HAVE to take it at exactly the same time everyday...something I know I would not be very diligent about. I had tried the depo shot previously, but I gained 30lbs from it, which just made me depressed, so I was not going to go down that road again, and my doctor said that the arm implant usually has the same side effects as depo. Condoms are not something my husband and I wanted at all, plus I have a latex allergy, so crossed that one off. Leaving us with the IUD, which I have heard good things about and my doctor recommended the mirena over the copper, so there you have it. It's such a personal choice, however, I would strongly recommend giving your doc or nurse a call and discussing your feelings, especially about which side effects you'd most like to avoid. Good luck! And congrats on new baby!

  • I just started the mini pill today. I pray that it doesn't affect my supply!! I don't plan on taking it for long because my husband decided he is going to take one for the team and get a vasectomy! I just don't want and "OOPS" while we are trying to get an appointment!
  • I just got Mirena last week and so far, so good.

  • I got mirena this past Thursday and it's great so far. I knew I wasn't going to take a pill the same time every day or wearing a patch for a week at a time, and I did NOT want to risk weight gain with depo lol and although I was iffy on mirena I think it was best for me. I don't have to worry about a brother or sister for LO anytime soon and it was quick and painless to get.

  • I'm not. We're going to let nature take its course, and if numbet two comes along, so be it.

  • Condoms until it is OK for#2.  I am  late 30s and had fertility issues.  So I don't want to do anything hormonal that would have to clear out of my system.  Plus, as soon as the Dr gives the thumbs up we will likely try for the 2nd.

  • I did the depo shot. I'm breast feeding and haven't noticed any issues there. I got the shot 4-5 weeks ago. The doc mentioned no cycle and plus I'm nursing so I thought that sounded good. I took mini pill last time and wasn't good about remembering when to take it. And iUD scares me. Unfortunately for me...I started spotting almost 2 weeks ago! Ugh. This sucks. I guess that keeps me from doing the deed at least for a while longer. It's still too painful.
