Bottle Cleaning/Sterlization

Hi Ladies!

I'm 17 weeks today with my first and started my registry this weekend. What an overwhelming process! I however am trying to do this in bits and pieces so it's less so. I plan to pump exclusively, so I find myself registering for bottles, standing in front of both the electric and microwave sterilizers and asking myself is it necessary to sterilize the bottles after every use? Could any knowledgable mommy to be tell me what is appropriate?

 Thanks!

Re: Bottle Cleaning/Sterlization

  • You do not need a sterilizer because the dish washer will sterilize them for you.  If you feel that won't do or don't have a sterilizer, get one if you are concerned.  I would be fine with just washing them, but that's just me.

I sterilized the bottles before the first use and maybe again after a few months use. I did not clean my bottles in a dishwasher because I didn't want the dishwasher residue on the bottles. A good bottle brush and hot soapy water will clean them just fine.

I also exclusively pumped for one year with my first. It is a lot of work, and very time consuming compared to just nursing but I chose to do it because I couldn't get the breast feeding thing to work.

  • I did not sterilize bottles, I just used hot soapy water. As for pump parts and cleaning those, Medela makes microwave sterilization bags that are rather handy, definitely recommend those. I admire anyone who can exclusively pump. It was more than enough for me to have to pump while I was at work!
  • I use hot soapy water to wash them daily and boil all of them once a week....

  • We sterilized them (boiled on the stove) after taking them out of the package and then just hand-washed from there on out. I replaced the nipples (we used Tommee Tippee, their nipples are easy to buy replacements for) about every eight weeks, and replaced the bottles at around six months. I tried the dishwasher, but even as nice as ours is, it still left a strange film on the bottles and nipples, and I ended up having to rewash them every time. Hot soapy water works just fine!

  • Oh my goodness, you ladies were so kind to respond. For some reason I have randomly stopped getting my emails from The Bump, thank you for all of your advice.
