Reflux: What were the symptoms?

My DS is just over 5 weeks old, and he's started having some big spitting and choking episodes. It happens at all hours at least 7-8 times a day (maybe more), although the amount of spit usually isn't a whole lot. Last night he spit a lot and it even came out his nose. I am wondering if it could be reflux. He also has painful gas bubbles. What does AR look like in your little one if he has been dx'ed?

Re: Reflux: What were the symptoms?

  • Those symptoms sound like reflux.  It is good to talk to your pediatrician about your son's symptoms.

My son had reflux.  We had to hold him at an angle when we fed him.  And then we had to keep him at an angle for 30 minutes after we fed him.  We normally put him in his bouncer or on a wedge that was built for him by an occupational therapist.  My son actually slept in his wedge on the floor for the 1st year, and then we transitioned him to the crib when he was 1 years old.

  • DD all of a sudden went from a happy baby to being miserable at about 3 weeks.  The first sign even before this is that she used gag in her sleep.  She also had frequent hiccups and was coughing a lot.  She wanted to nurse all.the.time and then she started spitting up large quantities.

I took her to the pedi and she was diagnosed with AR.  She was put on Zantac and the pedi suggested moving to formula (I was already heading towards giving up bf, so her suggestion was the small push I needed).  She's currently on Similac Sensitive and the combo of the meds and the formula seems to be working ok.  I am thinking she might have slight MSPI (Milk/Soy protein intolerance) and am going to discuss some of the symptoms I've seen next week at her 2 month check-up.

  • We were just prescribed Zantac for DS. He has had green stools for about 2 weeks now. Our pedi said she isn't worried about them since he has enough wet diapers and some normal yellow diapers mixed in. She said sometimes babies have green stool. Really? I've never seen a green diaper until this child!

Either he has reflux or I have a milk imbalance. Or he has issues with something I am eating. Either way, he is screaming after feedings, throwing his neck back, and making his body stiff. He has also been making a 'tasting' motion with his mouth after eating and throwing up small amounts of curdled milk.

ETA: I've given up dairy, soy, and nuts just in case that's what is causing the green stools.

Do you mean he is sticking out his tongue in a sort of  "tasting" motion?  Because DD does that too and I believe it is a sign of reflux as is the curdled milk spit up.

Yes, just like he's tasting something new and it's not good! What really baffles me is the green stool.

I always thought green stool is a result of milk imbalance.   But, I just looked it up on kellymom and here's an article I found: https://kellymom.com/health/baby-health/m2m-green-stools/.

We've been having several discussions about reflux on DS's BMB, because a bunch of us have new babies and several of us have LO's with reflux.  One of the ladies gave us a website that has a lot of information about reflux and milk/soy allergies.  It also has a quiz you can take to see if your LO likely has reflux.  The website is www.refluxrebels.com
