New to The Bump

New here - preconception questions

Hi all, new to the bump

I am 32, living in the Virginia suburbs of DC.  Been married for 2.5 years

We are just starting the TTC process, just got off BC after being on it for 16 years so I wanted to give my body a few months (or more) to get back in the swing of things.

Did you all have a pre-conception appointment? I had my regular GYN annual in march and mentioned we were starting the process late summer/fall and she told me the basics (start taking pre-natals).

I will be using a different OBGYN that my current GYN, so should I do the preconception appointment with the new OBGYN (do not have one picked out yet),  will an OBGYN think it is weird to set up an appointment when you aren't pregnant yet?

On a positive note I have been using Ovulation tests to see if I have the LH surge (to get an idea if I am ovulating again or not after being on the pill for so long), I got my first positive test this weekend after only being off the pill for only 2 weeks.  I know the LH surge does not guarantee Ovulation but it seems like a good sign.

Re: New here - preconception questions

  • Hi there,

I am also just coming off BC after being on it for many years.  It can definitely take a few months for your body to even out.  I have just started temping the past couple of days and have not done any Ovulation tests or anything yet. I can often take months for people to start that again, so it's exciting that you have already had a positive test!

Many people choose to do pre-conception appointments for various reasons. It's important when choosing and OB/GYN that you are comfortable with whomever it is and that you are on the same page as far as a birth plan. If you have a specific plan in mind, you might consider going to a couple different places and making appointments. Think of it as similar to an interview. Other reasons for making a pre-conception visit is to discuss genetic counseling, (if there is any history of problems in the family...or not!) or to double check the health of the mother.  It's also entirely acceptable to make an appt. just because you want to and it will make you feel more confident/comfortable. Go for it!

I have decided to forgo the pre-conception visit as of right now. I recently had a pap smear and a physical and, like you, I mentioned we were going to get into the process of TTC and requested that my physician keep that in mind during the exams and pay special attention.  I also have a very specific birth plan and plan to use the care of a midwife in conjunction with a OB/GYN and in my area there is only one facility who provides this type of care.  I have found books such as "What to Expect When You Are Expecting" to be very helpful as they have preconception information in the front of them and follow your pregnancy chronologically as well. As for prenatals, just start taking them now! Most physicians recommend them 3 months prior to TTC and, they're good for so many things other than pregnancy as well. They sure can't hurt you at all.

Hope this helps! I'm excited for you. This is a special time! Enjoy it.

  • I was on the pill for 16 years... just went off about a month and a half ago. My naturopath had me start taking my temp as soon as I went off. I ovulated about 2 weeks after going off of the pill and got my period the same time as normal.

I have done a lot of research on TTC after the pill. Most people (including my naturopath and doc) said that you only need to wait one cycle prior to starting to try. So we might give it a go this month!

    Best of luck!!
