Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Barely eating during the day.

LO is 5 1/2 months.  Last night she at 6 oz. before bed around 7, we topped her off before we went to bed at 10, when she ate another 6 oz.  At her normal wakeup around 4AM she ate another 6 oz.  That's 18 oz. in one night, and she's been doing this the last week or so.  During the day I try to feed her every 3- 3 1/2 hours, but she just snacks.  She'll eat 2-4 oz, MAYBE.  Is this still the 4mo wakeful?  Is she too preoccupied during the day to eat?  I've even tried feeding her in her bedroom in the rocking chair where it is completely quiet, and she still doesn't eat much.  I'm concerned that she's getting almost 3/4 of her food at nighttime and she isn't eating much at all during the day.  Has this happened to anyone else?  Suggestions?  I'd like to start weaning her off the large nighttime feedings at some point...

Re: Barely eating during the day.

  • My DD is 4 months now and I find she is distracted during the day when she eats as well.  It's hard to get a full bottle down without her turning her head or looking around.  You mentioned the "4 month wakeful" and I've never heard of that before?? What is that exactly?

The best way I get her to eat is just before she's ready to fall asleep I give her the bottle, that way she's calm, relaxed and generally to tired to be distracted.

The 4MW is essentially what you are describing. The baby is more alert to their surroundings and as such, doesn't consume as many calories during the day. So, they wake up during the night.

However, food is not always required with the night wakings. When DD went through a week of 4MW all she wanted to do was play. Sure she would take a bottle if I offered but her primary motive for waking was to cuddle.

Try smaller amounts more frequently. That way its gone before they know it. You can do 2 ounces every 2 hours and should be able to get the caloric intake they need.
