2+ BF mums re: toddler drinking BM

A while ago I posted about this.. I'd seen a post on Breastfeeding where women who were pumping gave some of the extra milk to their toddler in a cup to drink, for the immunity properties/antibodies, esp. during cold & flu season.

Well I've had a supply tank in the arvos/early evening so I've been pumping to increase supply (plus those lactation cookies!) and since I'm SAHM right now and my freezer stash is sufficient, I've been giving DS1 milk in his sippy cup.   It's winter here, and he's been on the verge of a cold for a couple weeks, but it hasn't really eventuated.  Maybe due to the BM?

I guess it's sweeter than cow's milk because he first time he had it (covered sippy with lid) he said, "oh Mummy it's chocolate milk!" he thought it was a real treat.  He doesn't know it's BM, I don't want him to start demanding it all the time.  But I'll keep it up for now.

Have you thought about this?

  • I'm all for it and if I have extra I will do the same. But like you I wil not tell her what it is because she will pitch a fit if she thinks she can have it on her command.

Also my evening supply dip annoys the heck out of me and D gets so pissy about it. It was the exact same with #1. It started around 3 months when I went back to work and I didn't get relief until we started solids at 6mos. Most of the time I spray milk like a fire hose so pumping to increase supply is a double edged sword.

I was waiting for you to reply Harper'smom:)  These lactation cookies are da bomb.. I've had rock boobs the next morning after 3 days of eating them.  And yes, it's the evening feed before bed for me too.. DS2 gets pissy and feeds for 2 hours nonstop basically from 5pm-7pm.  He's used to the oversupply too.

  • Thanks for the link! I wonder how potent the cookies would be without the eggs, a butter substitute, and with dairy/soy free chocolate chips for my MSPI babies. Maybe I'll be the MSPI guinea pig and give them a try this weekend.

Well I left out the choc chips and subbed 1/2 sugar for Truvia (am trying to lose weight afterall!) and anyway, I think the lactogenic ingredients are the brewer's yeast (I doubled), oats, flaxseed, almond butter, and any nuts you might add.  I bet you can do it!

  • This is why I love this board. I never would have thought of this without being on here and reading it. I would do the exact same thing if I had a toddler as welll. When DS is older and I have another I'll be sure to remember this!

That makes sense. With one girl allergic to dairy and egg and the other having issues with dairy and soy baking can be tricky these days. I really should have binged more when I had the chance between weaning and the second birth! :-)

Oh please let me know if they work with the substitutions! I am also dealing with a less than optimal supply late in the day and would love to try these as well (Chloe is also milk allergic)

  • have any of you tried drinking fennel tea? that always helps my supply!
  • I had a bag of milk that would have expired before the next time LO went to daycare so I pours in DD1's sippy cup with some cows milk. I couldn't bare to waste it. If I have extra milk, I will give it to her but I'm not going to add pump sessions or anything.

Can I have the recipe? I've been trying to get my supply up  for 3 months. I'm so sick of pumping and supplementing, and fenugreek only helps so much.

I'd love the recipe too. My LC said not to use fenugreek because I'm dealing with a fore/hind milk imbalance that it could exacerbate. I'd love to try this!

  • I will definitely do it in cold/flu season, especially since DD1 will be starting preschool and exposed to lots more germs then she ever has been before. That said, I asked DH and he thought it was kind of weird. Oh well.

I haven't- is that something I order online or get at a health food store? How much do you drink?

  • I tried when he was sick recently and he wasn't a fan, which is weird since he was such a titty baby and breastfed for 10 months (until I dried up).

here in germany, it's available at any supermarket. I'm not sure about in the states ... maybe at a whole foods or something? a cup or two a day should do it. I was drinking liters of it with my first, and I ended up with a nasty oversupply that resulted in my midwife having to milk me. the bonus is that it also helps with LO's gas.

Oh thank you! I will give it a try!
