Leappad 2 or Leapster GS??

I want to buy one of these for DS who is 3 years 2 months old. Does anyone have either or know enough about which would be more appropriate? The leappad is listed for ages 3-9 and the leapster is for 4-9.

  • We got the Leapster GS for DS (at 4.5).  In reading the Leappad reviews it just seemed that if you wanted an iPad, you should just get an iPad for a couple hundred more.  DS loves it.

  • I would definitely get the leappad 2 ,my 5 yr old has the first one right now,but my 3 yr old plays with it all the time. There's a lot more things do on it,play games, ebooks, watch videos, the new one will have front and back cameras, music player, plus later this fall u can get an mp3 player upgrade to it,they will love it!!
  • I initially liked the idea of a leappad, but the games are pretty expensive. If you consider the cost that goes into a leappad, games, etc a refurbished ipad may only be another hundred dollars more. Another option would be an ipod touch, which would be comparable to the price of a leappad+games.

When my son was 3 years old we went with a Mobigo. He isn't a huge video game kid, but it was wonderful for plane flights and meals at restaurants.

  • If I had it to do over again I would go with an ipad.    My DD plays with mine more than her leapster and leapster apps are so expensive.    The ipad has so many more free apps and you can do so much more with it.
  • I read all the reviews on them on Amazon and we went with the Leapster Explorer. DS loves it for in the car or trips but while at home Wii is still king.

We recently had the same thought process and we got DS the iPod touch.  We were able to get it with a super heavy duty case for $200.  We feel that we'd easily have spent that $100 difference with the leappad.  As leappad cartridges were around $20+ and leappad apps were $5+.  We have not spent more than $3 an app on the iPod and most have been free. Also, the leappad did not have rechargeable batteries included, so we'd have shelled more money out replacing batteries, buying an adapter, or buying rechargeable batteries.  Plus we'd have also bought a case for the leappad.

We also love that we can put our own kids music that we already own on the ipod (can't do that with leappad).  He can watch Disney Jr on it with our cable plan, or netflix videos through our netflix plan, etc.  He adores the camera feature and is constantly taking pictures.  Really an iPod touch offers way more than he can use, but we felt that it was really the best decision.

  • My DH and I both have iPads and my son uses them all the time.. He's 2.5 and he can work it better then I can! Lol.. The books, shows, apps, games, it's got it al! We take it on long car rides and he can watch a movie or play his games...read a book (well the books actually read to him) which is nice when I'm driving.....it's totally worth the money..

  • Thanks for the input. We actually have an iPad that DS loves, which is what prompted me into looking to buy him something he could have as his own. I might have to reconsider buying a leapfrog product if it's just going to be less interesting than what he's already used to.
