My UO is that some moms need to quit bumping and researching so much and start paying attention to their kids. Congratulations you are a gold and/or platinum poster and you have done all the research on BF, EBF, BLW, and WTF else. You missed out on your kid growing up while reaching that status.
I don't know about you but my kid is 8m old and still sleeps more than she is awake so that leaves plenty of time for bumping/researching without missing out on a single second with her.
And I spend about 1.5 hours per work day pumping and plenty of time either holding a nursing baby or holding a sleeping baby on the weekends, leaving lots of time for reading and bumping

I suppose any brand of baby junk food should be included. It starts with banana puffs instead of a banana. Or a ravioli packaged meal instead of a home cooked meal. Then it's a handful of apple jacks instead of eggs and toast. Or pretzels instead of carrots. It may be a stretch, but I think 6 months is awfully young to replacing real food with convenience food. It becomes engrained in who we are and then it feels normal to eat a frozen dinner or fast food instead of real food. Do I think those foods are evil? No. Do I think they should be a daily part of an infant's diet? No.
But does anyone actually give their baby puffs in the place of fruit? Does anyone give banana flavored puffs and say "Okay gave my kid fruit for today"? Or are people giving them puffs instead of cheerios which have been used for years as a finger food because they are small, easy to pick up, and easy for babies to chew and puffs are much healthier than cheerios.
I gave DD chunks of banana tonight and guess what? She couldn't pick up a single one because they are way too slippery. I also gave her some puffs and she was able to eat every single one of them and has developed a remarkably good pincer grasp because of them. Does that mean when she's 5 I'm going to feed her McDonald's everyday? No because I don't give her puffs because they are convenient I give them to her because A. She likes them B. She can pick them up C. They are much healthier than many other alternatives.

Their stage 2 and 3 organic jars are full of ingredients beyond just the fruit or veggie and water, including gelatin. I don't make all of my own food and definitely think gerber's is gross. I returned all the stage 2 ones I bought after I realized how much crap they are adding.
No idea what kind your buying but this from their website (since I am not about to go in and risk waking DD up to take a pic: Ingredients: APPLES, STRAWBERRY PUREE, FULLY RIPENED BANANAS, ASCORBIC ACID (VITAMIN C)
No gelatin or any other crazy additives. And all the one's I looked at were the same. (Again this is only the fruit/veggie one's as pureed meat creeps me out)
I bought them at the grocery store, which is also where I returned them to.
here's the label to one of the gerber containers i had that the smaller grocery store by my house didnt carry (therefore i couldnt return it). it's organic strawberry banana oatmeal i think.
sorry if it's huge.

my only point is that gerber is being deceptive. maybe you dont buy organic - as PPs have said, the non-organic gerber foods are more basic ingredients. based off my previous experience (the nasty organic food), it is hard for me to trust them so i won't be buying any more gerber baby food products.

- If I'm out shopping and DD is getting fussy and I don't have the time or ability to whip out an actual pear or banana and instead grab a few puffs and this happens several times a week and yes I do it for convenience...I don't care if you judge me. They're called convenience foods for a reason. If you are only feeding your baby convenience foods, you're an idiot. If you are feeding your baby convenience foods when you can't do anything else, you're human. If you have the ability, time, and money to only offer fresh food, good for you. I'm not one of them.
Of all the crazy in this post, you're worked up about semantics?
Republican, Noun: A person advocating or supporting republican government.
Democrat, Noun: An advocate or supporter of democracy.
Conservative, Noun: A person who is averse to change and holds to traditional values and attitudes, typically in politics.
Liberal, Noun: A person of liberal views.
None of these words signify "the extreme right and left"...that is how you are interpreting them in your brain. Your logic is incorrect by definition of the English language, and in the context of our (peaceful) discussion, the words are relatively interchangeable.

So she said "I don't like your dog".
Is it just me or did she use the correct form? I consider myself educated and as far as I know "you're" is a contraction for "you are". So, "your" would be the correct usage there. The only reason at all that I'm doubting myself is because it seems that littlewinnie agreed and she's got some journalism skillz.

Ever hear of Blue Dog Democrats who call themselves "fiscal conservatives"? Conservative is not synonymous with Republican. They also have a history of voting for moderate social policies, as opposed to liberal social policies. Democrat is not synonymous with liberal. There you go. This is hardly something I made up in my head. I have plenty of friends who consider themselves conservative Democrats and liberal Republicans. I don't see much evidence of me getting "worked up" in my post. I merely pointed something out.
I see your point, however, I believe that when you're saying something negative about Obama and then you say you're anti-liberal then you are really saying you're anti-democrat.
Also, you are kind of reiterating my point. Just because someone says they are a democrat/liberal doesn't mean they can't have some republican/conservative points of view. You should never vote or not vote for someone based on party affiliation.

Ah, I see. Yeah, I was not listing things in order of importance or anything. That was just the first one I was thinking of. Also I was not saying Republican is extreme right and Democrat is extreme left. Liberals are referred to as far left; conservatives as far right. Think of the Tea Party. They are far right, but not all Republicans (i.e. moderates) like them. I think we're agreeing for the most part, but it bugs me when people say conservative when they mean Republican and vice versa. I usually vote Republican, but I would in no way describe myself as conservative because I support liberal social policies.
I see. I guess I just don't view conservative or liberal as the extremes either..? Like, I consider myself fiscally conservative but I support (certain parts) of the Affordable Health Act? I dunno, I guess I never considered either term and extreme. In general, I guess the term I'd use for political extremists would be Whack-job.

Actually, far-left leaning liberals are Communists, and far-right leaning conservatives are Fascists, historically. Liberals are anything left of center, and conservatives are right of center, outside of the "Moderate" buffer.
FWIW: A regular banana has 17 g of sugar. Gerber Bananas, stage 2 - 16 g. SOOOO, you go ahead and use that banana and add those fruit sugars up. I'm going to keep using Gerber.
Whoops. nicazz = me. It's been a while since I've been here, signed in with what I thought was my account, but was apparently one I made once and then never used. No AE here.
Just pointing out that it might not be a fair comparison if you take serving size into account. I don't think Gerber/Puffs are solely to blame for childhood obesity. But I do think that the tendency to chose processed foods over real food is a major contributor to obesity of all ages. But I'm also realistic and know that a well-balanced diet can include some processed foods. Like the ice cream I am currently eating.
Obviously I wasn't very clear in what my opinion actually is. I knew it would be unpopular. That's why it's in this thread. I didn't realize it had also been unclear.
I see nothing wrong with Gerber (or any other brand) of purees.
Now, I do see something wrong with diets that are filled with all kinds of snacky carbs like chips, crackers, pretzels, sugary sodas, sugary cereals. Yes, I think these things are a big contributor to obesity. Maybe even worse than McDonalds because some of them even manage to disguise themselves as healthy. Sure, they can be a part of a healthy diet, but not a large part. I think it's a shame that we start filling our LOs diets with these snacky carbs at such a young age. To some degree, it's our own habits that are being shaped here. We get used to handing them puffs and yogurt melts now, and later we're doing fruit loops for breakfast and crackers for snacks instead of something better(again, these things are fine, when it's a small part of the diet)
Now, I also think the Gerber meals are pretty evil, but the reasons for that are probably more obvious.

Are organic carrot sticks healthier than a bag of Lay's potato chips? Yes, of course. Do I work 40 hours a week and commute 1.5 hours per day, yes. I puree my own veggies and fruit for DD and freeze them. The only ingredients are the veggie/fruit and formula. But I also have given my DD Gerber cheese puffs to help her learn how to use her jaws and gums to chew.
Some days I send my older DD to school with pre-packaged apples with dip. Am I a horrible mother whose daughter is destined to be obese? Well, I would love to have even better eating habits for my entire family. But as far as I see it, with working full time and 2 kids, something has to give. I am glad that she is at least eating an apple vs a little debbie cake with her lunch. And, she likes sliced apples, which is hard to send to school without them turning brown.
I agree with the person who said it's not Gerber's fault, it's the parents' fault We need to teach children that it's ok to have a "snack" or a dessert, but it should be limited and the rest of the diet should have a good variety of nutritious foods. And I will be the first one to admit that I need to do a better job of following this advice.

I agree with most of this post. I am also a full time working mom of 2 children. I understand the time constraints. I really do. And I'm grateful that the daycare provides good, healthy food for my kids, which takes away some of the stress of having to come up with things that are easy. to pack and healthy. And I'm definitely not perfect.
I just think that it's awfully early to be starting with these junky foods and that if there's any time we really can be pretty close to perfect, it's now. If we start with baby cheetos and puffs, well that's just setting a bad precedent.

Docking dog's tails, clipping ears and removing their dewclaws are abuse. There is no way you can justify it.
If you are an evolutionist, then you can argue that they evolved to have it.
If you are a creationist, then you can argue God created them with it.
It should be illegal to say "Oh look, that dog is perfect in every way, now lets chop off his tail, pull some nails and shape his ears funny".
I get what you are saying and I even agree with it for the most part (except the dew claws, I have had a dog rip it getting stuck in a blanket) but to play th devils advocate.. What's the difference in getting a dog spayed or neutered? It's physically changing (for males, at least) and goes against nature?
Now, don't get me Wrong, I think it's the most responsible thing a pet owner can (And should) do but I know people can claim there are benefits to tail docking, dew claw removal, etc.. Just like spaying or neutering.
Spaying and neutering is, like you said, a responsible thing to do, otherwise lots more pets would be euthanised. I think that balances out, rather fix the dog than kill other dogs eventually.
99% of the reasons I have heard for docking tails, clipping ears etc. are for aesthetic reasons. IMHO that is not good enough to randomly go cut off puppy tails.
I doubt anyone will read this, since its from Wednesday, I've been in trainings all week. Anyways, I was completely against tail docking until we were forced to cut our Boxer's tail off. When we adopted her as a puppy, we had the option of docking her tail, and since I know it can be painful, we opted against it. A year and a half later, she's almost fully grown, and had an incredibly thick tail that when she hit you with it, REALLY hurt. She whipped her tail so much that it broke last October. She was in so pain, I hurt for her. We went to the vet when we noticed it was broken, and the only humane option was to have it surgically removed. After she recovered, she was so happy because she didn't have that giant tail weighing her down. Their tails are connected to their spine, so when it gets damaged, it can be incredibly painful.

This.
Aaaand you are?????
Nice first post.
Whoops. nicazz = me.
Now you all officially know I'm crazy
