2nd time moms - when/what to tell LO #1?

Those who already have LO, have you told your LO about the baby yet? We've already been talking a little bit about it with DS who is 2. I told him there's a baby growing in mommy's belly and showed him pictures of when I was pregnant with him. He's kissed my belly and asked to hold the baby which is adorable. I know he's too young to really understand what is going on though. If he were older and more aware, I'd probably wait until I felt sure that everything was alright with the baby before telling him. But I'm just so excited to go through this with him and have him see my growing belly! So are you already discussing the new baby with the soon-to-be older siblings?

  • We don't plan on talking about it with DD until I'm beginning to really show. I know her concept of waiting and patience isn't all there yet.

  • I will definately be waiting until I really start to show before starting with the baby in the belly thing.  She's still a little young anyway to really understand.

  • He's way too young to understand. I'm sure we will talk about a new brother/sister and say his/her name beforehand.. But I'm not expecting much ;)

  • Probably also when I really start showing.  DS will be so young that he probably won't get the concept until baby is almost here.

  • My kids know already, but they're almost 9, almost 6, 3 1/2, and 1 1/2.  Well, my 1 1/2yo has no clue.  LOL  But my 3 1/2yo is excited.  He was just telling Daddy tonight that he hopes the baby is a boy.

  • My DS is 4 and most definitely will know what we are talking about. We are not telling him until we are ready for the world to know, though, because he will be over the moon and want to share with everyone who crosses his path.

  • We're not telling them until we're at least out of first tri. But we might wait longer until I really start showing and they can put it all together.

  • Before we started TTC, I told DD (2) where babies live before they come out. Ever since then, she's asked if there's a baby in my belly. If she sees a pregnant woman, she usually tells me there's a baby in her. I think it helps that she's been around pregnant friends and seen them before/after baby. She's really excited to feel the baby kick.

One fun thing I'm doing with her is showing her how big the baby is with whatever food it is compared to. Yesterday, I showed her a poppyseed and we talked about how the baby is so little and it still has to grow in mommy for a long time before it can come out and play. Even though she's young, I want her to feel involved.

This is where we are.  We're at least waiting until after my first appointment next week at 6w, and may wait another few weeks after that.  We'll tell DD first, and then she'll definitely spill the beans, since she's been asking if she can have a baby brother or sister for nearly a year now.
