Very Late & Longgg Natural Hospital Birth Story 5-13-12

On may 9th, I was working from home and started having some light back pain. I timed the cramps and they were 15-20 minutes apart. I knew this was the start of labor as I also had lseen some blood the last couple of days. I knew I was having the baby that week! I bought some diapers that night and got into bed early.
5/10 2:30 AM- I was awoken with stronger cramps/contractions. They were similiar to a period cramp in feeling and intensity. I was able to get a few more hours of sleep and then at 5:30 or so I was up again. I told DH to go to work and get some work done because the baby would likely be coming that evening. I let my mgr know that I didn?t feel well and would be taking a sick day. I put on my sneakers and went for a walk around 9:00am for an hour or so. Then I went to get a mani/pedi. The contractions were about 10 minutes apart but I was able to walk and talk through them.
Around 3pm I called my OB to ask what I should/should not be doing because my labor wasn?t progressing. He said not to tire myself out walking because that won?t help labor come on quicker and I didn?t want to tire myself out for the real stuff.
When DH got home from work we decided to go see a movie (Avengers). At this time (6pm) the contractions started getting stonger and I was uncomfortable in the car. It was difficult to sit still through them so we turned around and went home. The rest of the night continued like this with the contractions getting stronger but only somewhat closer together.
5/11 1:00am- I decided to get into the shower to labor in there. I was in there for 90 minutes with very strong contractions every 5 minutes. I would get on all fours with the water hitting my back during the contrax. In between the contrax I shaved and scrubbed the shower/tub LOL
2:30am- i get out of the shower and my contrax start going all over the place. 12-7-5-9 minutes apart. I was trying to deal with them on the ball and falling asleep in between them only to be awoken by that terrible pain.
5:30AM- I woke DH up and I called my OB and told him the situation. He said to come to his office at 9:30. I got back in the shower and just dealt with it for the next couple of hours. I told DH that i didn?t think I could do it naturally. I?m too tired and in too much pain.
Around 9am I called my MIL who was going to come with us and we 3 left. My words to DH were ?Call your mom bc she wants to come because she is annoying like that.? Boy did I end up eating my words...
Of course my husband had to stop for DD iced coffee (I took one too) and a bagel from the bagel shop. I was going to strangle him.
We get to the OB office and before he checks me he says ?i know you?re anxious but you?re not in labor.? I said ?Oh God if you tell me I am only 2 cm I will cry.? He said ?You will be lucky if you?re 2 cm. See that smile there? You?re not in labor. You wouldnt be laughing if you were in real labor.? He checks me and I was 4 cm!!! He told me to stay local (hospital is 2 blocks away), see a movie (yeah right!), get breaskfast, etc and to go back to him at 12:30pm. The hospital was packed and they didn?t have beds. We went to Dunkin Donuts, i got a egg and cheese on a croissant and some water. We went to Central Park. At this point, DH decides to go buy the video camera he has 10 months to buy. He leaves me with MIL. I was OK with this. We walked around the park and I squatted through the contractions and she applied counter pressure. This was so much better than laboring on my own in the shower at home. People were aksing us if we were OK LOL. We were quite a sight to see.
At 12pm the contractions were steady 4 mins apart, sometimes 3 mins. We went back to the OB ad he said I was over 6cm!!! We got in the car for the 2 block drive to the hospital and went to labor & delivery. I was so emotional in triage. I couldnt believe I was there. they didn?t check me because my OB had called me in. All the nurses were saying ?Wow! how?d you do it this far?!? and asking me what number baby this was (first!) so that really gave me a boost.
By 1:30 I was in my own room. The nurse asked if I wanted an EPI and I said I prefer not to but we?ll see. i squatted during these contractions too but the nurses kept coming in to adjust the heart rate monitor. It was annoying. I had to get the IV too (just OB/Hosp policy and I didn?t fight it) so that limited mobility. I had enough room to squat tho and that was all i wanted. At one point, a nurse comes in and wants to know if I could stand during my contractions. I was stunned. I said I?m not sure what to say to that but I will try. I did actually try but squatting was better. After 30 minutes or so another nurse came in and asked me that same thing. I just said NO. No one asked me anything again.
3pm or so- OB comes to check me and says I am 8cm. At that point, I knew I could do it. Some contractions were coming every 2 minutes but others were also coming after 4-5 minutes so they never came ?one on top of the other? like I expected. He offered to break my water. He said there wasn?t a need since I was progressing well but if it would most likely speed it up. A nurse suggested I try a stool for the contrax. I was moaning through them and at this point, the counter pressure my poor MIL had been applying wasn?t even helping. I was offered the epi and declined.
At 5:00pm the OB checked me and I was 9.5cm. He said he would like to break my water as it is bulging anyway. i obliged. It actually felt good. It relieved alot of pressue and the contractions were not stronger. I was eager to push and he said ok le?ts try. I did and then he said ok. He took a few minutes to prep and then we started pushing with the contractions. I pushed in the typical laying down with knees up and pushed through 3 contractions. Honestly, it was not the ?relief? I read about. It was intense and it feels like what it actually is...A baby coming out of your vagina. I had a 1st degree tear on the perinium and a small tear on top. I felt the tearing on top and knew that was what was happening.
At 5:36pm my baby boy was born. He was bluish and had GLOWING blonde hair. He was put on my stomach and was not crying so after a few minutes they took him from me to clear the mucous, etc. I was really in shock at the whole experience and don?t even remember DH cutting the cord LOL.

EDD 10/15/16
At 20-week anatomy scan found IUGR (Intrauterine Growth Restriction), and very low Amniotic Fluid. Now, I'm High Risk and have weekly ultrasounds to monitor fluid and growth. If baby runs out of room or is too growth restricted, they will deliver ASAP. My current goal is to make it to 28 weeks!
This forum is what really helped me to educate myself about natural birth. I tried to put in a lot of details to help others the way those details helped me during my pregnancy. I still feel like I missed a lot of details so feel free to message me. Good luck! It is totally possible. Just stay relaxed and calm and trust your body!
