How do you know if you are over feeding?

I EBF, and feed on demand, but it seems like he is always demanding my boob! He spits up a lot so I was wondering if he is eating too much. Any ideas?

  • I've wondered this too. I'm not sure but Lilly still eats every 2-3 hours all day long. It seems like all she wants to do is hang out on the boob.

  • I've heard that you cannot overfeed a BF baby.  That they won't eat more than they need.  I've wondered this too, esp. when he chucks up..!

This is what I've heard too, but sometimes I'm like, okay, this is enough, I unlatch him and sit him up and chunks of breastmilk everywhere. It is gross.

  • my DS eats every 2 hours but when we did weighted feeds at the LC, I learned he only gets about 2.5 oz. It's not a supply issue, more of an attention thing. She said some babies are more of snackers than meal eaters

this could be what he is doing. He wants to eat like every 2 hours, and sometimes more than that. He was STTN, but now with the growth spurt and now teeth he wakes up a few times a night but it doesn't seem like he eats a lot them maybe he makes up for it during his daytime feedings. I can get him to go 4 hrs between feeding sometime during the day if we aren't home and driving, shopping, something where he is moving around in a car or stoller.

DD also eats about every 2 hrs, sometimes every 1 1/2 hrs. Do you feed from both breasts at a feeding?  DD seems to go for longer stretches if she gets both breasts.  Sometimes its just one and she passes out, and one time she just wouldn't latch again so I guess she was full.  I don't think spit up necessarily means they have gotten too much because DD has spit up before and wanted to eat a few minutes later.

A lot of times he just eats from one side, and if he eats from the other side he won't eat much at all.

Sometimes I wonder if I'm over feeding.  She gains so quickly and eats every 2-3 hours.  At a weighed feeding the LC said she took almost 3oz from just one side so I know shes getting a decent amount each time. I know they say bf babies don't over eat but somtimes I really question that.  DD loves to comfort nurse at every feeding and even though she's not getting much after a while I know she's still getting something.  Also,  I think if I put her up to the boob she would eat even if she just ate.

I wonder this daily. I've had people question me if I'm really EBF because "bf babies don't gain that quick." Then I start to worry that I'm over feeding.

BF babies normally gain weight faster at first and then slow down from what I hear, but I don't know at what point, I know before a year.

Ive heard it both ways but all the bf babies I know gained quicker but I've had three people comment and ask if I'm really NOT supplementing. He's tripled his birthweight but was small to begin with but has soared in terms of growing. By 3 days old he was back at his birth weight.

He looks healthy so I wouldn't worry. I know DH at 2 months was 90 percentile for weight when at birth he was around 40 percentile so he grew a long. He is pretty long though, so the weight doesn't look like he is super chubby, just normal baby chubby.
