WW & Breastfeeding-how long to wait?

Hi all, question about doing weight watchers-I'd like to start again (it's been a couple of years, but I had success in the past). I'm a FTM and breastfeeding is going well. I don't want to screw up my supply but I'd like to start doing WW soon. I've read 6 weeks or two months but did anyone start earlier and was their any impact on your supply? Thanks in advance!

  • I think you can start WW while breastfeeding.  They build in extra calories for BFing moms.

  • WW allows for extra points for BF'ing moms.  And, FWIW, it has been my experience that HYDRATION more than anything affects my supply.

So, I can cut calories down to 1100 per day, but as long as I'm drinking a TON of water, my supply is fine.

ETA:  I am not suggesting you cut calories dramatically, I'm just making an example.

  • You should have an appt with your doctor around 6 weeks post partum. Once you get clearance from him/her that your body is adjusting fine, you can start WW.

Really, you don't want to start any sort of calorie restriction before your 6 weeks post partum, especially if you are breastfeeding. Getting your supply up and regulated is the most important thing you can do in that wait time.

You also want to give your body enough time to regulate your hormones-which can cause big flucuations in your weight as well.

enjoy your few weeks post partum and good luck!

  • I started at 8 weeks and had no issues. I know that doesn't answer your question, but the WW recommends 6-8 weeks and they do that for a reason.

Like pp said hydration is huge, and I also think everyone is different. Some people's supply is very temperamental, while others have really solid supply that nothing shakes.

Personally, I made the choice to give myself that 8 weeks, both for my supply and for my own sanity.

Look after your baby, eat well, get rest and worry about the weight later.
