Sorry for all the posting today, it's slow around here and E is extra sleepy from being up all night teething.

We use a safety harness and buckle Max in whenever we're in the car. We have done this since he was a puppy.

  • No buckle, but we put them in their carriers... I drive a convertible, so a loose cat wouldn't be a good thing.
  • Carriers. If I let me cats run lose in the car I would never be able to get them out.

  • When Molly was a puppy if she wasn't harnessed she'd try to climb in my lap and lick my face.  Not the best idea while driving Smile

  • If the cats go anywhere they're in their carriers.

Diesel and Sadie ride in the back of our trucks--so now harnesses. I can't imagine putting them in harnesses (they are 130+ pounds).

Jersey has her own booster seat with harness. Otherwise she's a drivers distraction.

  • The cat goes in his carrier and the carrier gets buckled in for longer drives.  Going to the vet (like a mile away), he goes in the carrier but not buckled.

  • The dog is harnessed in the backseat next to LO. We had the harness pre-baby but I didn't use it all the time; now I do because I don't want her (the dog) to become a projectile. Also, it keeps her from climbing in the driver's lap/licking the baby's face, lol.

The projectile reason is why Max is harnessed too. We started doing it because he gets car anxiety sometimes and this helps to calm him down. When he goes for rides he lays down and doesn't like to move around at all.

We use a dog seatbelt for Skippy. He is pretty good and probably wouldn't do anything, but I don't want to take any chances. If he tries to jump on my lap while driving and I am distracted by it, it could end really bad.

  • We have always used a seatbelt harness from day 1.  The way I see it, she weighs almost 50 lbs.  That's as much as a toddler.  She can go through the windshield just as easily as a child.  I know that's really graphic, but I would devastated if something happened to her and it was all because I didn't buckle her in.

Also, an injured dog can be a hazard to paramedics so keeping them strapped in serves another purpose.

  • Our lab rides in the cargo area of our Tahoe. There is a safety gate between him and the second row seat.
