I think birth control is making me crazy

I just went from a minipill to a regular pill this month (I've been taking it for two solid weeks) and I think it's making me crazy. I'm irritated beyond control constantly and just plain sad sometimes. My discharge is wack-o, too! I feel like I'm in the third tri again!

Unfortunately, I don't have insurance coverage for any birth control that's not a regular daily pill. Do you think it's worth it to pay a bunch for an IUD or something? I refuse to use condoms.

Re: I think birth control is making me crazy

  • My sister turns psycho on bc, anything but the minipill. She crys at the drop of a hat, then screaming like she is going to kill someone the next minute, so tired all the time and killer headaches. my poor BIL had to convince her to change bc because he couldnt handle the mood swings.

If what your describing is as bad as hers is, I say yes. Does it interfere with your daily life? your relationships?

If yes, I say look into other options.

I hated hormonal BC, then I got a clot so I can't take it anyway...so I have Paragard.

Just a random thought, but if you are on an employer-sponsored health plan, a lot of them will be required to cover certain women's health services (including IUDs and sterilization procedures) in full starting in 2013.  It's part of Obama's health care reform law.  It doesn't apply to every plan all the time, but to make a long story short...it may mean you could have coverage next year.  (I'm a consultant in health and welfare benefits).

I'm actually my company's benefits administrator, but work for a church who has elected grandfathered status, so I don't know if we'll be required to cover IUD's next year or not. I haven't looked into the nitty-gritty rules for the healthcare reform yet...ugh.

    Not if you're grandfathered...sorry.  :(

This is exactly how I've been since starting the pill, getting progressively worse each month. I quit it last week because I refuse to be that person.

I stopped after just 1 month for the same reason, I was going crazy and couldn't sleep, DH insisted I go off of it ASAP.

  • This is why I refuse to go back on the pill. I hated the way I felt on hormonal BCPs. Right now we chart, pnp, and use the occasional condom.

  • The first bc I ever went on was Orthotricyclen (sp).  I call it Orthopsycho!  It made me nuts.  Mad at every body and every thing.  I started snapping at my nephews for no reason.  It's pretty bad when you see yourself doing these kinds of things...I knew it was the bc.  I just told my dr what was going on and they switched me.  You may just need to change pills, different hormone levels.  I'm on Levora now and have had no problems.  Just tell your dr what it's doing and they'll switch you to something else.  I don't know that an IUD would necessarily make a difference, unless you went with the copper one, because they're hormone based too....and if it caused problems, it wouldn't be just a matter of switching, you'd have to go have it taken out.
