Babies on the Brain

Anyone have hand, foot, and mouth as an adult?

I am 99% sure I have it. I felt like death all weekend. It started with a sore throat and a fever. Now I have little blisters all over my hands and feet. I also have some in my nose (ouch).

I am going to try to get in to the Dr. later this afternoon but I figured I would ask about it here. How long can I expect this to last? I found a ton on it in kids but very little about it in adults.

  • It's caused by a virus, so if it is HFM, be prepared to hear that there's no real treatment.  I didn't get it but DS had the fever for one day.  He had the little spots for a week, maybe two but they gradually lessened.

  • Thanks. I just need to get confirmation because I work with kids. The oldest is sick today too. I either got it from him or my OB's office last week.
  • My sister got it from my son last summer, and it took her awhile to get over it. Unfortunately, adults are hit harder by it than kids. I think remember she had the blisters for a few weeks...sorry you have it!

I am going to cut off my feet if this goes on for weeks. My boss and I were talking today about how many times we have been sick in the past few years.

Before I started working with kids I would get a cold here and there. Now the kids get a cold and I get a full blown sinus infection that takes months to get rid of completely. They are fun and sweet so I guess I can deal with some strange illnesses.

I got it last September.   OMG    Worst sore throat ever.  EVER.  Thought it was bad strep, but the doc looked at it and said "that's not strep".   Then I mentioned that my baby currently had HFM.    Yep.  that's what it was.    Then the high high fever hit (like 104).   I thought I was going to die.   Probably the worst illness I've had in a long long time.

Thank god this all hit the day my mom was over to help take care of DD#1 (since that was the day of her tooth extraction).   I was out of commission after getting home from the dentist (and then doc later that day).

I think my fever lasted about a day.   Throat blisters about 2 or 3 days.
