Pregnant after IF

does one side go numb when sleeping?

Hey ladies. Sorry I haven't been around much. We haven't been home in a month and are visiting random family all over. I do have a question though. Since Thursday I have had a hard time sleeping. I am normally a side sleeper but will also sleep on my back occasionally but I have been avoiding back sleeping as my OB said I should stop after 16 weeks.

Well now it seems like I am only comfortable on my back because when I lay on either side my right hip goes numb and it will travel down to my leg!  This has happened randomly before (even pre-pregnancy) but never more then once and certainly never for days in a row! I think I am a little too early in my pregnancy for this, aren't I? Anyone else experience this around 14/15 weeks? Any solutions? I have a preggy pillow and have tried sleeping with it between my legs but my right side will still go numb unless I am on my back. Could it be the baby's position? Thanks gals!

Re: does one side go numb when sleeping?

  • Yup. I've had this too since I started having to sleep on my side around 15w. I have to switch sides about every hour during the night because my hips burn so bad. I have a body pillow but unfortunately it doesn't seem to help much.

I read somewhere that the hip pain was from the relaxin hormone???

  • I've had trouble sleeping on my sides my whole life (I'm usually a back sleeper) for this very reason.  I ALWAYS have something go numb, but usually it's my arm or hand.  It's gotten really bad over the last month or so -- sleeping is no longer something I look forward to!

  • I have had the same problem on occasion though it comes and goes.  My RE told me to drink lots of water.  I have been doing that and I think it's helped or maybe it went away on its own.  Either way drinking water is good for a pregnant lady so it's worth a try.

  • I had and still have the same problem. I prefer my back and sometimes still do a half back/half side position with pillows holding me up. My hips ache and go numb and I have to turn from side to side all night. My hands also go numb almost every night. I used to love my sleep. Not so much anymore :)

  • Thanks so much ladies. I made DH sleep in a different bed last night and I tried a comfier mattress and it seemed to have done the trick!
