NBR: My House Smells Like Death

Something died in our ducts and is now rotting.  This makes the ENTIRE house smell like death, but most prominently in the living room.

So, since we rent, we called maintenance.  They came over and went through the house and said the house only smelled like two large dogs lived there!  Excuse me?!?!?!  There is a definite difference between the smell of a dog and something rotting!!!!

Needless to say, thanks maintenance guy for calling me a slob!

So I got out all smelly candles and wax warmers I could find and put them all over.  Now my house smells like death and lavender.  Yippie.

I thought the same thing a few months ago, but it ended up being in the fridge, once I cleaned the fridge out it went away.

How rude of maintenance, I would call the building manager and report that person for being insensitive.

In our first apartment, we had a HORRIBLE smell and finally found potatoes under the sink that had turned into soup...literally, no chunks just liquid. We don't buy in bulk anymore.

    Same here. Happened twice.

Once in the fridge in the garage - someone didn't close the freezer all the way and the meat defrosted and went bad. Another time it was the kitchen fridge - a small pint of heavy cream was forgotten about in the back. Gross!

I hope you find the source and fast! I doubt the smell will just go away on its own.

  • Ohhh rotting animal and lavender, I love that combo! Seriously, I'd scour the house and make sure it's nothing you can handle yourself and then, if you don't find anything, keep calling maintenance until they do something about it!

  • Ditto the PPs who suggest double and triple checking everything else in the house. I was convinced there was a dead mouse in our vents one time and it also ended up being a bag of potatoes that was soupy. Disgusting, but not nearly as gross as a dead mouse and I could get it cleaned up quickly. If you find nothing keep harassing management and definitely complain about how that last visit was handled.

  • We have toen apart the living room twice.  Plus we are moving in a week and a half, so our house is already in boxes.

There are a couple of reasons that I know it's a dead animal in the vent:

    1) my dog was stalking the vent the night before the smell started.

    2) we opened the vent to vacuum it out and the smell got worse in the house.

    3) whenever you walk by the vent, the smell is the much more putrid than the rest of the house.

So, no bad food.  And nothing under the couch.  Unfortunately nothing more we can do till Monday and talk to the head of maintenance.
